Cool Apples and Oranges: Mickey Mantle or Bobby Hull?

Who was better Golden Boy Mickey Mantle with his 3.1 sec speed to first base and his 500 ft homers, or the Golden Jet Bobby Hull, the fastest skater with the hardest slap shot of his generation? I got this one as a toss up, so you pick'em.

Re: Apples and Oranges: Mickey Mantle or Bobby Hull?

Mantle was one of the stars of the book Ball Four, Hull's son played with Belfour.
Mantle hit them in the upper deck, Hull hit them in the upper lip.
Mantle's goal was to break records, Hull's held records for breaking goals
Mantle was in a league of his own, Hull created a league of his own
I'm a Yankee fan, so guess who I choose? But Hull was an original and a great, great player. Very good to the kids and the fans of the game too, by the way.

Legend my man...you not only know how to play the game...you like the Golden Jet or the Mick bring flair and color to the game...Props to you my man...way to weave a little magic into the answer, would that they could all play like you...but then, we all can't be a "Legend"...

Mickey Mantle because of Ball Four and Seinfeld

Eloquently put, Legend, and super Wizard bonus points for the Ball Four reference.

Does Bobby Hull make the starting All-Time hockey team? Mantle does.

Plus, Mickey (like Joltin' Joe and Keith Hernandez, among others) inspired a "Seinfeld" episode ("The Seven"), always bonus points, even to a Hall of Fame career.

Gotta go with Mickey. Nice thread, dude.

You know Wiz, I had it a toss up until you threw in the Seinfield episode...that has to nudge Mick over the top by a hair

Mickey Mantle starts on the All-Time time hockey team?

I always knew the guy was a phenominal hitter, but I had no idea he could skate with the best of 'em. Who knew? I guess he wins this one hands down, because I have it on good authority that Hull was a lousy baseball player.

Re: Apples and Oranges: Mickey Mantle or Bobby Hull?

There's also this other story involving Mantle in pop culture that's worth a repeat.

In some talk show of the 1970s (it may have been Dick Cavett's), Paul Simon appeared on the show with Mickey Mantle. Now Simon to this day lists Mantle among his heroes and as his favorite on the diamond, and he was gaga over Mantle.

On a break with the cameras stopped, Mantle asks Simon, "Say, if I was your favorite ballplayer, why didn't you put me in that song?"

And Simon says, "It was the syllables, Mickey. They were all wrong."

Don't know if it's true, can't even recall where i heard it. Sounds good, though.

Where have you gone Mickey Mantle?...naw...Mantle was not "gone yet"...the old Yankee had a season to go when the song already appeared on the Graduate...Its hard to say, "Where have you gone Mickey Mantle?"before the dude takes his final bow...It would come across as his skills have faded...that's my take anyway...for what its worth...
