Well, in at least one way. As anyone with cable knows, at one point
Wilt Chamberlain wanted to step into the ring with Muhammad Ali himself. And as
East Side Boxing explains, this was no novelty match: Wilt was expressly interested in fighting for the heavyweight belt.
According to today's
Orlando Sentinel, one of today's premier big men is also getting serious about boxing:
It was Howard -- a big fan of legendary Muhammad Ali -- back in January who first approached Magic strength and conditioning coach Joe Rogowski about training with boxers. Shortly after last season ended, with the Magic's woeful playoff loss to the Detroit Pistons, Rogowski found the gym that would accommodate them.
"You're always looking for conditioning options away from the court in the offseason, something to spark their interest," Rogowski said. "The boxing is the hardest, toughest thing they do, but they really seem to enjoy it."
Trainer Eric "Dirty" Duntson says that Howard "looked like a robot" when he first showed up. And of course, the Magic's franchise guy has probably fallen behind since he's been away at FIBA stuff. Still, the idea of Howard able to competently land a punch should strike fear into the heart of
this generation's Brad Miller.
