Monday night's late event, the men's 5,000 meters, got a little bit lost in the shuffle after the strirring 800 final.
Adam Goucher, who lives and trains locally in Portland, dropped out of the race with two laps to go.
"I was hedging my bets," Goucher said as he approached the media afterward.
Goucher was doing math in his head and with two laps to go he was 4-5 seconds slower than where he needed to be to attain the A standard and make the Olympic team that will compete in Beijing.
Injuries have prevented him from securing the 13:21 standard during the qualifying window. He has a lifetime best of 13:10 from 2005.
Although he says he is in the best shape of his life, Goucher knew he wouldn't be able to close fast enough to get the A standard. So with two laps to go, he knew he was wasting his time and his valuable energy.
