OXFORD — After a week of absorbing body blows, the Ole Miss football team's defensive line doesn't look quite like the juggernaut that was advertised before fall practice began.
The latest piece of bad news is that defensive end Greg Hardy, who led the Southeastern Conference with 10 sacks last season, will miss six to eight weeks after having surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.
The surgery was performed on Monday in Memphis. If Hardy misses the full eight weeks, he won't be available until the Rebels play at Alabama on Oct. 18.
"He was looking like a million dollars for the first few days of practice," Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. "And the next thing you know, (the foot) flared up on him. He thought it was a bruise, but then you do an X-ray and there's a little crack in there."
Nutt said that Hardy battled a similar injury in high school at Memphis Briarcrest, though it was on the other foot.
