OXFORD — Ole Miss has gained an oral commitment from a California running back who nearly signed with Mississippi State in 2006.

Kenny Ashley, who is enrolled at El Camino (Calif.) Community College, was committed to MSU before changing his mind and signing with Southern California.

Ashley said Tuesday night he committed to Rebel coach Ed Orgeron recently and intends to enroll and play for the Rebels in 2008.

“They’re bringing in some quality guys, good players,” Ashley said. “It’s a great system up there. I’ll try to get in and help them win some ball games.”

The 5-foot-9, 210-pound Ashley was a highly touted prospect who committed to the Bulldogs while playing for Venice High. After signing with USC, he didn’t meet NCAA freshman initial academic eligibility requirements and enrolled at a junior college in Arizona.
