| Schaeffer's improvement makes it 2-QB race at UM OXFORD — The battle for the starting quarterback job at Ole Miss has been trimmed to two. Coach Ed Orgeron said after Wednesday's practice that the Rebels will have either Seth Adams or Brent Schaeffer under center when the season opens at Memphis on Sept. 1. The third candidate - redshirt freshman Michael Herrick - is no longer in the mix despite receiving second-team work throughout the preseason. "Michael has dropped a little bit on the depth chart," Orgeron said. "It doesn't mean that he won't play this year. But I think he's still a ways away." Adams, who has been considered the front-runner for the position since spring practice, has worked with the first-team offense throughout the preseason. Orgeron had listed Schaeffer, last season's starter, as the third-team quarterback this month. But Orgeron said there was a change in the depth chart after Herrick Schaeffer's improvement makes it 2-QB race at UM
