Gifted freshman Strong quickly moves atop the linebacker depth chart while waiting final clearance from NCAA

OXFORD — The academic eligibility clock is ticking for Chris Strong, but it's one of the last things on the new Ole Miss linebacker's mind this week.

After all, he's wearing a red jersey on the practice field to signify his first-team status. He's trying to digest the Rebels' defensive schemes, formations and packages as quickly as possible, too. To top it off, he's trying to shed about 15 pounds off his 6-foot-2, 265-pound frame.

So the former South Panola High star - and the state's reigning Mr. Football - said he's not thinking about the NCAA as he awaits its decision on his eligibility case.
