Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

Rhett Bomar had an up-and-down season last year, completing 54.2% of his passes and throwing for as many touchdowns as INTs but throwing for 229 yards and winning MVP honors in the Holiday Bowl. He tells Street & Smiths that he expects to have a better season in 2006, thanks largely to his experience. "This feels totally different than last year," Bomar said. "When you have experience under your belt, that makes it a whole lot different." So will Bomar perform better in his 2nd year as the Sooners starting QB?

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

Rhett Bomar & his center J.D. Quinn got kicked off the team today so I think that OU's title chances are gone.

Who's the back up QB for the Sooners? Anybody there who might be able to step up to help have a decent season?

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

As the depth chart goes, Joey Halzle is in the 2nd spot on the depth chart. A junior college transfer from Golden West C.C. & then its Hayes McEachern out of Austin H.S. in Austin, Tx. But there is always Paul Thompson, who was beet out by Bomar last season. Paul could be the better choice, since he has experience. With Chuck Long's drop back style of office gone & Kevin Wilson making the calls, I think Thompson's style is better for Wilson's style of coaching.

Here is an article on the dimisal...of all things to get booted for...illegal job...its time the NCAA fixes these type of problems...they make a pretty penny off these guys...

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar was kicked off the team Wednesday after an investigation revealed he broke NCAA rules through his employment at a local business, according to a television report.
Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."
Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed. Oklahoma City television station KOCO reported that Bomar's roommate, offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, was the second player.

Looks like it's going to be Thompson, at least that what ESPNews was reporting earlier today.

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

im not for people breaking rules what so ever. but i think NCAA has to take another look at the student athletes postion. The top schools make alot of money on their sports programs and the student athletes do get an educaiton out of it. But what about the non scholarship athletes, they cant have jobs during the season. And espically in baseball you play summer ball where you dont have time for a job. People need to rethink the idea of some things. I think players during season need an "allowance" so they can get the basic things they need cause you know no pro athlete can have any energy off dorm food

I have to agree with you. The top level athletes at high profile schools generate huge revenue for their schools and are expected to live like paupers. A business major on scholarship is allowed to make any amount of money possible for whatever reason possible yet athetic scholarships are treated totally different. It really makes no sense to me at all.

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

I agree, some of these kids can't do anything, while the univ. are making millions off of them.
There were approx. 23 players working for this car dealer (under different owners of the dealership), the same dealer that let Petersen drive around in a Lexus for 2 weeks, before financing came through on the car, he was report to have been buying. There will be more to come on all of this & it doesn't look pretty.

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

I agree with the consensus that the NCAA needs to develop a new approach to these situations, but I think Bomar took something like 18,000 grand from a booster. While all college students need money for some sort of sustenance, its not like he needed 18,000 "just to get by". In this particular situation it was done out of want, more so than need.

i agree with you, but my comment was directed towards the non scholarship athletes, and even with these 18000 is a little to much i just think in some ways they need to reform the system, its an old system that needs to come to modern times, without killing the small colleges

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

How much does OU lose at the QB position with Thompson instead of Bomar? Is it a massive drop-off?

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

massive isnt a good word for it, i think significant is better. Thompson is going to hold the fort down, but i dont think is going to lead the team down the field as well as Bomar

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

Thompson was actually the starter before Bomar took over. He has some game experience and is a 5th year senior, so he should be well versed in the system. Bomar was one of the highest rated QBs coming out of high school so obviously is athletically superior, but Thompson should still be able to get from 8-10 wins for the Sooners this year so long as the OL holds up. The loss of RT Quinn may be worse than the loss of Bomar due to the lack of depth the Sooners already had on the OL entering this season.

Re: Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar

I'd like to see Thompson have a good year. This is a kid that didn't put up any fight, when he was told Bomar was going to be starting after the TCU game last year & then moved to wr. Several interviews, showed he was there to help the team, wherever they put him. He should do better, since Chuck Long isn't the offensive coordinator, with his drop back style of offense. Kevin Wilson will get the QB out of the pocket, more suited for Thompson.
It is amazing how from a day or two ago here, all you heard on sports radio was Bomar. Now this evening, the day of Fan/Media day, the most talk was about, the names not being on the back of the jerseys this year.
