Oklahoma dismisses coveted recruit Jarboe in wake of Internet video

Oklahoma has kicked freshman wide receiver Josh Jarboe off the team, coach Bob Stoops announced Friday.

Jarboe

"We are disappointed in this outcome, but our complete review and the final decision is in the best interest of the program," Stoops said in a prepared statement.

Jarboe, ranked 13th on ESPN's list of top high school players last season, was sentenced in May to two years' probation and 80 hours of community service for carrying a gun on the grounds of his high school in Decatur, Ga. An assistant principal caught him there with a pistol in his possession in the school parking lot.

The Tulsa World reported that Stoops' decision came after he met Friday morning with Jarboe. "We outlined for Josh the expectations we had for him when he arrived and unfortunately, those expectations have not been met," Stoops said. "Josh needs to learn from this experience. We hope he can move forward in a positive manner."

Jarboe, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, was one of the most heralded players in Oklahoma's 2008 recruiting class. He was ranked by ESPN as the nation's 10th-best wide receiver after producing 34 catches for 643 yards for Cedar Grove High School last season. He had 15 touchdown receptions on 92 catches in his high school career.

The Sooners' fall camp in preparation for the 2008 season begins Sunday in Norman, Okla.

There has to be more to this than what has been made public. I can't imagine a complete dismissal for participating in a tasteless rap video.

If you read the fine print, I think Stoops wasn't happy that Jarboe was arrested for carrying a gun on a Georgia high school property. He was given probation as well and is usually enough reason for coaches to kick somebody off of a team. I think that a suspension would have been a more appropriate punishment. However, it is the coach's decision.

Damn if that had been a snake I'd be dead. I didn't even see the gun deal just read the article about the rap video.

I saw the gun deal but for some reason I was thinking he was recruited to the Sooners after the gun deal.

Re: Sooners Kick Top Recruit Off Team

Jarboe was arrested for the gun charge after he accepted OU's scholarship offer. So after some kind of plea bargain, Stoops decided to give him a second chance. The rap video flat out blew that second chance. Stoops had no choice but to let the kid go, and as soon as possible, which he did. Jarboe needs to get things together before he either kills somebody, gets killed, or has another chance at a football career. But I'm pretty sure we won't ever be seeing him in Crimson and Creme.

Thanks 3fanforever for updating us on this matter. It sounds like the combination of being arrested and Jarboe blowing it when he got a second chance from a production of an internet video did him in.

The video is on Youtube based on what I saw he should have been suspended for lack of rap talent. Some kids never get it and think their athletic talent is enough. Sad

It was typical of the "Gangsta Rap" we hear all the time. It promoted violence and was by some standards lewd. Just a stupid kid with a stupid idea. I hate to stereotype but it was typical of what comes out of the inner city.

I don't know about this particular kid but so many of them come from single mom homes and have little or no father influence. This seems to be the typical result when kids have kids

He talked about owning guns and shooting people with them. Like JRL said, typical "gangsta" rap crap. Sample:

"Shoot you in the head and you might be dead with a halo. So hold on, don't beg for your life. And hold on, don't ask please.”

"Best believe I'm from Atlanta, from Atlanta, where they tote guns and tote AKs and AKs.”

"I'll shoot you're ass up like a damn pool table.”

After the plea bargain and before the rap video, Stoops was quoted in one of the local papers here saying “we have already stressed to him that his citizenship is of the utmost importance. He understands that anything less than exemplary behavior will not be tolerated.”

Apparently he didn't get the message Stoops gave him, or didn't care.
