Re: Peterson Car Deal

I don't see what the big deal here is. His mom said they were going to buy it but the payments wound up being higher than they thought. The car dealer says it's his standard practice to give customers a grace period to drive the car prior to financing being finalized. You or I or anyone else could've done this. Ergo, not a violation. The kid did nothing wrong.

The NCAA ought to get a life...freaking hypocrits...the kids bring the University money, and that's all well and good and legal...but heaven forbid they enjoy perks along the way...

I don't know what to think. I guess I am just so used to all of the negative stuff that every time something pops up I freak out...

I say pay the college athletes...if the school makes money off their name, I would say a royalty is in order, don't you think?...Actually I don't see why student athletes jsut don't trade mark their names...everytime the school uses it they have to be paid for it...hey, its not like they are making money for "playing"...

Re: Peterson Car Deal

There are many ways to look at college athletics today. One is to want to give the athletes some sort of stipend for what they do for the schools, but another is to realize that 90 per cent of these kids wouldn't be close to being able to get into any college if it were not for their athletic ability, hence they are already getting something for nothing in effect- a college education if they actually apply themselves. Unfortunately, most of these kids have been allowed to skate by in the clasroom from the point in high school that they were recognized as superior athletes, and have no chance of being competitive academically. Here in eastern Connecticut, the best local basketball player was involved in "an incident" this past season. His punishment was to sit out two games that the team didn't need him for and then be re-instated. The lesson he learned? "I got away with one there." Then the paper will report how he is being looked at by a Division I school some time in the near future. My daughter, who had to work her way through UConn, along with my wife and I coming up with some big bucks, earned everything she ever got there, including her Masters in forensic psychology. Marcus Williams, the UConn point guard, broke intop dorms and stole lap tops, but got off with just missing UConn's first 11 games, all non-conference. Then yesterday he declared for the NBA draft. If my daughter had stolen just one computer, to help her academically, she would have been expelled. Gee, I wonder what classes Marcus needed all those computers for?

Now come on Legend are most of the athletes in the elite sports (those bringing in money to the school) really there for an education?...not really...and who does it hurt if they were able to make money at it?...

Besides we are talking apples and oranges...if they break the school's honor code get rid of them like any other student...but what does that have to do with letting them make money from endorsements and so forth...

And your story reminds me of one told by Jimmy Johnson...Johnson once cut a player for falling asleep in a meeting...asked if he would have done the same had the player been Troy Aikman...Jimmy said, "If it was Troy, I would have gone over and nudged him awake."

Like Jimmy, school's know which kids bring money to their programs...is it right?...no...is it a fact of life as long as school's make money from these kids...you betcha..
