Sooners may cancel Washington game

This is just getting silly now. Because of their dispute with the Pac-10 over the officiating at Saturday's game against Oregon, the Oklahoma Sooners are now threatening to pull out of their 2008 game against Washington.

More info is available at: Dispute with Pac-10 could affect Oklahoma-Washington series - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports

Whether you agree with OU's complaints about the refs for not, you've got to admit that this is taking it too far. You can't punish Washington for the mistakes of one officiating crew, maybe even just one single replay official. You guys agree, right?

I disagree. The PAC10 brought this on themselves. They are the only conference that rules that it's own officiating crews call non-conference PAC10 home games. They also do not allow their crews to travel to non-conference away games. Usually, if an SEC team travels to the Big 12 for a game, SEC officials call that game. Obviously, OU feels it has legitimate cause to question the integrity of the PAC10 and it's officiating crews. I can't say I disagree with them at this point.

Re: Sooners may cancel Washington game

I'd think that Oklahoma wouldn't try to continue to let what happened affect them in such a way as they seemingly are. It may not be right but GET OVER IT OKIES! It can't be un-done, sure it was an awful call.

If they do end up forfeiting a game with Washington, that's low.

Re: Sooners may cancel Washington game

Oklahoma has had more than their share of breaks, including a trip to the BCS title game fresh off a 35-7 whoopin to Kansas State. Last year Sooner fans cried for weeks about the Texas Tech game and getting robbed by the refs. The refs did make mistakes, mistakes are the human element of the game. Get over it and move on. Cancelling Washington in the future as payback, if that's what it's supposed to be, can easily be ridiculed for cowardice. If I'm an Okie fan I would be worried about this week's game and Texas coming up real soon.

See, I just don't understand the logic. Oklahoma's telling Pac-10 teams that they want to use their own refs instead of the Pac-10 refs? So what's the guarantee that EITHER team's refs will be unbiased? There is none, really. I just don't get why the NCAA doesn't use centralized crews at all times.

Let them use Sun Belt refs like we had in the Alamo Bowl.

To me it's like the neighborhood kid who didn't like losing and took his ball and went home.

No--Oklahoma is not telling them they have to use their "own" refs, but protocol is that the visiting team supplies the refs in every conference except the PAC10. At least that is what I read earlier.

That's simply not true. Most conferences use their own officials at home games. When Oregon played at Okalahoma last year, it was a Big 12 crew. Mixed crews are the worst possibility. Nothing is wrong with the system, there was just a huge mistake that won't likely happen again for a long while. Besides, make the kick already!

Never thought I would agree with Bob Knight, but I have to give him props for calling out Oklahoma on their hypocrisy. He got screwed out of a win by careless (if not dishonest) time-keeping and asked Oklahoma to forfeit. Well did they? Besides, Oklahoma doesn't exactly possess the moral high ground in athetics (e.g. Barry Switzer, Rhett Bomar) so the whole victim thing just doesn't play.

I hadn't heard the Knight comments, so I went digging for them. Here's what he said in an interview with The Oklahoman: "Maybe now those people at Oklahoma understand what I was talking about... Had Oklahoma forfeited that game against us like I suggested, they would have gotten far more positive publicity out of that than if they had gone to the Final Four that year. Now I guess the 'duck' is swimming in the other pond."

Very interesting... well, you reap what you sew, Sooners!

I don't think one official making one bad call can justify you saying "the whole pac 10 brought this apon themselves". I think the more likely answer is that teams from the big 12 and the sec look for any excuse they can find to stay away from the west coast. Quack, Quack!

Re: Sooners may cancel Washington game

It is very common for Pac10 teams to get the same type of treatment from refs when they travel east to play. It happens to everyone. Sooner fans need to stop acting like spoiled children and grow up. You would think that Oklahoma actually has a legitimate shot at a national title this year. Get real folks! National title teams don't win at home by 7 over UAB.
