Gordy is a top-notch football official

As a football official myself, Gordy Reise is as qualified, dignified, experienced, and honest as it gets. His character is without question, and the fact he's being vilified like this sickens me.

What I find time and time again is just how far off the average football fan is from the reality of actually officiating a football game. Folks, it is truly a challenge. There is at any given time 10 or more checks going on at the same time on any given play. Knowing the mechanics, rules, and everything else takes years of experience to master, and even the masters make mistakes. If Gordy Reise can blow a call, anyone can.
Gordy, if you're out there reading this, just know what a positive influence you've had on me and many others. Peace brother!

Hi GetOffGordy, welcome to GoTeamsGo

I appreciate you chiming in on one of the most controvesial issues in recent memory, especially with a personal knowledge of Reise.

Unless I've missed something, you won't find any death threats against him here, nor any threats against his family. While some sports forums might think that's fine, we're a little different here.

On the other hand, I think that anybody that's got any interest in this game has a right to be outraged at the blown call. That was a huge mistake on a huge stage with huge implications. I know that I wouldn't want to be the one who made such a huge mistake.

Look forward to chatting with you more.

Re: Gordy is a top-notch football official

Thanks for the response.

I'm sure you have a nice group here.. not the type to send death threats. However, he did get them, and that's despicable.

I understand you're anger, Sooners. I was at the game, and this type of thing seems to happen to my team all the time. I feel your pain.

Here's a couple of things to keep in mind that might help mitigate your anger.

1. NO game is ever decided by one play. The total effort means far more than any one play. Both teams played hard, and both teams had big flaws. The Sooner defense let you down big time at the end. Direct your anger there.

2. In his interview, Gordon Riese said he did not have the benefit of ABC's broadcast and its technology. He did not get to slow the film down to the same extent, and highlight certain aspects of the play. Nor did he have multiple angles. From some of the angles, it is not easy to tell who hits the ball first. If Gordy only had one of those less clear angles, it's easy to see how a mistake might get made.

3. The place was going completely nuts. I've never seen a stadium erupt like that. As an official myself, I can tell you that you really have to focus in to not be effected by the noise. I think this contributed to the offical's difficulty officiating the game at the end. That's not a good excuse, but it is reality, and helps to explain things.

4. You should have seen the Sooner fans there. I don't take any satisfaction in there shock, but it was something to behold. Afterwards, many of them were just happy to have witnessed it, even at their expense. It was an incredible, once in 25 years moment.

One more thing

There was several blown calls made during the game that benefited in a big way both teams. Take away that touchdown in the first half when the Sooner pushed off and perhaps this conversation isn't taking place.

Any Sooner fans who can confirm this? Some may have been happy to have witnessed it but I can't imagine many of them were feeling anything besides fury.

Re: Gordy is a top-notch football official

the reality inside the stadium was completely different than on tv. Everyone thought Oregon got the ball... everyone assumed the play was correct.. in fact, we were shocked it was taking so long, or they would review it.

The Sooners were mostly stunned, but as I walked back to the car, and at the post-game tailgater, several Sooner fans were glad they were there for such as game. I kid you not.

I agree that the death threats and the like are ridiculious and way way out of line. However, I am going to question the integrity of this official in this case. There is no way that call should have been made when instant replay is involved. He allowed personal allegiances to cloud his judgement in this case, IMO. If he didn't there is no way he could have made that call. The evidence overwhelmingly showed that the call on the field was incorrect. What other reasonable explanation is there?
