I question the timing. Not really, I'm only mock cynical here, but it's exactly what you'd expect from a major program with two layups before The Game Of The Year in college football.

Ohio State defensive backs Donald Washington and Jamario O'Neal told reporters Thursday at media day that they've been suspended for the first two games of the season ... Neither player elaborated on the reasons for the suspensions.

That'd be against Youngstown State and Ohio, where the backups will be in before halftime anyway. I'm sure Coach Tressel would have been more comfortable with his defensive backs at least getting some game action before facing USC but them's the breaks. Washington is a starter and O'Neal contributes heavily as a backup.

Newsflash: lost of teams have suspended players over the spring and summer. And I'd be less than 5% of those guys will wind up missing any meaningful action. That's just the way it is in college football, but only the Buckeyes seem to get called out on it. Hey, don't hate the player, hate the game, as they say.

Ok, help out the newbie here. Why would a team want to suspend its players and why would it be questioned. This makes no sense to me at all.

No team WANTS to suspend their players. The issue comes from the timing of the suspension.
It's for two meaningless games and the Buckeyes can't possibly lose, and OSU's being criticized for that fact.

Ok, I get it.
So they suspend them for a couple of meaningless games. So what? If the rules dont forbid it, whats the big deal? Does anyone possibly think if they have a choice they will suspend them for the two biggest games of the season?
