Ohio State lost its final appeal and will pay former coach Jim O'Brien almost $3 million for wrongfully firing him. The university has used all available appeals and the case will finally end.
O'brien was basketball coach from 1998-2004. He was fired after he told someone he had loan $6000 to a prospective recruit. Such loans are against NCAA rules.
O'brien sued the university because of an Ohio state contract that limited what the school could do and when if he broke NCAA rules. It required a series of steps which the university failed to take.

This just doesnt seem right to me.

Well, a contract's a contract. OSU does need to own up to it, and I guess O'Brien deserves another chance.

What? Another chance to break the rules. It was the small print that got him off. Yeah, youre right, he got out of it legally but I dont like saying he deserves another chance. Had OSU followed the correct procedure and went through all the steps instead of just firing him, he'd still be out of work. He's guilty but gets off on a technicality. So what does this teach those kids??

He's not the first coach to ever get busted doing something like this, and many have gone on to be clean afterwards. Not everyone's Kelvin Sampson.

Who are we talking about here? Sampson got caught doing the same thing. O'Brien's the one I'm saying deserves another chance.

Sampson deserved a second chance. He had it and blew it. O'Brien also deserves another chance, and maybe he won't make the same mistake again.

Whoops, my bad. For some reason I thought I read O'Brien had messed up earlier in his career and then got the coaches mixed up.
