| Did Ohio State earn their bid? Having covered boxing for most of my adult life, I know all about incompetent, inane and corrupted rankings. This is not that. The BCS is not the WBA, the WBC or the IBF. Yes, everybody except the athletic directors and corporate bowl sponsors agrees that there should be a playoff system. But in lieu of anything so sane, one might admit that this partnership between man and machine actually works pretty well. That being said, I still don't understand what everybody else seems to be taking for granted: Ohio State. What exactly did the Buckeyes do to be rewarded with a No. 1 ranking and a chance in the championship game? Everybody talks about the losses. The fact that Ohio State has only one while the other serious contenders have two seems to be their sole qualification. Full Story

| Re: Did Ohio State earn their bid? Nice spin job against Ohio State by that author, particularly the "beat the team that lost to Appalacian State bit." Let me try it. Okay, well LSU lost to an Arkansas team that lost to an Alabama team that lost to Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe. Where's the outrage about that? I say this only to show that you can spin this kind of stuff any way you want to. Fact is OSU is the only BCS conference champion with one loss and they have the #1 ranked defense and scoring defense in the country. They're deserving.

| Re: Did Ohio State earn their bid? I'll agree Ohio State's schedule leaves something to be desired. But when you are one of two teams with one loss (and the other one is Kansas), and regardless of strength of schedule you have dominated every game you played in set aside one hiccup, and the rest of the country spent the better portion of the year playing themselves out of a title bid, then you deserve to be there as much, if not more so than anybody else. Additionally, if you look at the teams all the other contenders lost to: Pitt, Colorado, Stanford (at home), Kentucky, to Tennessee at home by 21, to LSU by 40, South Carolina (at home); a loss at home to Illinois looks a lot more respectable. I mean, they're a BCS team. Albeit one that was rewarded an at-large birth in the name of tradition, but a BCS team none the less. |
