Raiders O-line not as shakey as it may seem

Arguably it can be said that there were no upgrades to the team's o-line. A vet center was lost, replaced by another and a long time Raiders' left tackle was swapped with a younger face familiar in the Bay area.
Still this doesn't mean that the Raiders are in for a worst year than last.
The strongest area is up the middle. Both guards-Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle- are coming of strong years. They paved the way for RB Justin Fargas' first 1000 yard season despite the fact that he started less than half of the year. In pass protection the two guards allowed only 2 combined sacks for a loss of 6 yards.
At center replacing Jeremy Newberry is John Wade who is entering his 11th season and is reliable in both rushing and passing games.
The big question is at tackle, FA Kwame Harris. Harris was pulled from the San Francisco lineup after giving up 18 sacks in 05 and 06. The hope is a change of scenery and the offseason tutoring from o-line coach Tom Cable can reform the inconsistent tackle.

Re: Raiders O-line not as shakey as it may seem

I don't agree with you. Wade is a good starter. Not great, just good. I'm glad to see Gallery moved inside where he's a pretty solid guard, but he's now overpaid to do what most linemen in the league are...good run blockers. Carlisle is pretty good also. You're right about one thing, Harris is the biggest question mark, and that's an understatement. He's hot trash. He can't block in the open field and gets beat too often by athletic DE's, but when he gets his hands on you he's an average pass blocker. He's just not good. So you're looking at a line full of career under-achievers.

edit: We didn't even bring up Green the RT. He's not very good either. I don't see the Raiders being very good at pass blocking for a while. A good run blocking line, but a bad pass blocking line. I think they'll look better with McFadden and Fargus running behind these beefy guys tho. My mind hasn't changed one bit about how shakey this line looks.
