Jersey Number Too Costly

Raiders receiver Jerry Porter said earlier this year that he would change from No. 84 to No. 81. He subsequently was informed that, in order to do so, he would have to reimburse the Raiders and Reebok for $210,000 in unsold jerseys bearing Porter's name and the No. 84.
Apparently, one of the issues at work here was that of notice. "The more advance notice a player can provide when requesting a number change, the less chance there is of financial ramifications," Alic said.
But it's unclear how much notice is required. Porter said as early as February 21 that he planned to make the change. When exactly did Reebok begin its production run of $210,000 worth of shirts for an underachieving malcontent on a chronically crappy team?
We also think that a "you change it, you bought it" rule could lead to all sorts of strange complications. What if Porter converts to Islam in July and changes his name? Or what if he simply decides to retire? Will he be asked in either case to buy all of the jerseys that were made in reliance upon the fact that "Porter 84" would be playing for the Raiders this year?
And what if he dies as a result of an accident in which he was in some way negligent? Can the NFL, his team, and/or Reebok sue his estate for recovery of money spent making jerseys bearing his name?

WOW ... this could be costly for all the NASCAR drivers that change teams on a yearly basis. If I get divorced can I still use the checks that have my spouses name on them or must I pay her first and then use them and if I don't want to use them do I still have to pay her because I want just my name on the checks ??? I'm way to confused.

Re: Jersey Number Too Costly

There's a rumor that he might spring for the cash - unconfirmed at this point however.

Otherwise, I would add that JP could never be another 81.

Coming from this ol' Raider Dawg, I'm not a fan of Jerry Porter. First off, he's just not all that - I don't think there's CBs in the league losing sleep worried about covering JP.

He's one of the highest paid Raiders. He needs to have a couple of big seasons to justify the investment in him, otherwise, it was a bad investment.

He's now the 5th oldest Raider so, time is running out on our potential return on this investment.

But worst of all, he's not fan-friendly (wore a disrespectful shirt that included vulgarity at a fan-function with kids), whines when he gets the chance, and has disparaged Raider Great Art Shell in candid interviews with the media.

If he puts-up then fine, otherwise, off with his head.

Re: Jersey Number Too Costly

So I am guessing he gets a cut of the shirt sales then?

If not, then all bets are off...

This is one of the dumbest things I have heard of...

And doesn't the shirt become a "Classic"...a "Retro Shirt of Sort"...

Heck jsut play football will ya.

Ha ha! That is an excellent (and hilarious) point. I wonder where the Porter jersey ranks among their sales leaders.

Re: Jersey Number Too Costly

... I guess that I should add that it is dumb that things like this happen, these Corportation contracts and such. Heck, the Moss #18 shirts have been at half-price since the day. Otherwise, not too bright to print up a lot of Porter 84's - if Art had stayed then ... .

I've assumed the "Porter 84" is the issue, with a change to "Porter 81" the proposal.
