Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers wide receivers coach James Lofton is reportedly set to become the Oakland Raiders' next head coach. Lofton and the Raiders are working on details of a contract, according to sources. Lofton could be named the team's head coach as early as Wednesday, Jan. 17.

If this is true, boy are the Raiders stretching a bit or what.

I'm hearing that the talk may have been a little premature... Lofton made it sound like the talks were further along then they actually were. Lofton is a former Raider, playing wideout for them late in his career, and hiring position coaches instead of coordinators as head coaches seems to be a trend growing in popularity, so I could see this happening.

Lofton is the Chargers WR coach. It's not even like he's been a coordinator for one year.

I don't think anyone else has hired a position coach to be a head coach.

Herm Edwards was never a coordinator before the Jets hired him. He was the DB coach in KC.

That reminds me last week when someone from the forum reported "Mike Sherman is Arizona Cardnals new head coach." The problem with that is, the Arizona job was awarded to Ken Whisenhunt, while Mike Sherman has been named Offensive Coordinator for the Houston Texan. Kind of like a "Dewey defeats Truman" scenario all over again. I think the Raiders job will go to Steve Sarkisian. I also predict that one day, Art Shell will own the Oakland Raiders.
