| Piazza announces retirement after 16 seasons ![]() Mike Piazza announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday. Piazza hoped to play this year, but serious interest never materialized from a major league team. The future Hall of Famer ends his career with a .308/.377/.545 line, 427 homers and 1,335 RBI in 1,912 games over 16 seasons. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, he set the record for homers by a catcher and he twice led the NL in OPS+. His .362-40-124 season in 1997 was maybe the greatest offensive year ever for a catcher. | Re: Piazza announces retirement after 16 seasons Johnny Bench had a 45 homer, 145 RBI year in 1970 but "only" hit .293. However, between him and Piazza on a whole there is no comparison. Piazza was a first baseman masquerading as a catcher. |
