Greatest A's player in Team history...

Who is the greatest A's in team history? We are talking Oakland franchise only...no going back to getting Jimmy Fox now.

I would think it has to be someone in the 73-75 teams...perhaps Catfish, Fingers or Jackson?...or maybe a long shot like Campy?

Yeah but Jackson and Hunter had the titles...not that I don't like Mac, one of my favorites ever...but does winning overshadow personal glory?

yes, but Jackson, Hunter and Fingers are HOFer caliber players with titles...big difference...

(and Archie Manning any day of the week, and three times on Sunday...he is one of my old time favorites...which of course begs a Saints post)

Goth, say what you will, but you asked for the best player in A's history. You can't limit it just to the Oakland guys. Think of all the greats you'd leave out of the mix. So I'm ignoring you and considering all eras of Athletics baseball. Sorry.

That said, this is still a tough decision. You've got McGwire, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Dennis Eckersley, Rollie Fingers, Nap Lajoie, Catfish Hunter, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Frank Baker, Connie Mack. Lots of good guys have donned the A's jersey throughout the years. Tough for me to narrow it down to just one.

This is a tough team to decide. maybe we should set it up as a poll and let the vote decide.

Well, I was gonna run multiple threads...

I forget Henderson in my haste...and Homerun Baker...lol...sure he can be included...Mack's contibution is of a different nature...

For my money I have to go with double XX...Jimmy Foxx...they say his homers hit with so much force as to splinter the seats...if there had been no Ruth, we would all know Foxx a bit better...

and didn't Lefty Grove pitch for them as well?

Cool Re: Greatest A's player in Team history...

I don't even think it's arguable - REGGIE.

McGwire was never that great for the A's and his greatest years were for the Cardinals and on steroids.

Ricky? I would put him 2nd.

Pitching wise, I would say Catfish and then Rollie Fingers with Dave Stewart not far behind.

If we're going modern-era only, I'd vote Fingers, then Jackson, then McGwire.

Re: Greatest A's player in Team history...

I have been going by the first name that pops in my head when I think about the team. Then see if there is anybody better. Ricky Henderson is the first name that pops in my head when I think A's. He played for several teams, but his best were with the A's.

On a side note. I googled his stats to see if he played for the team long enough. On my google toolbar, as you enter a search it has a scrolldown window with suggestions. When I typed Ricky, the first name that popped up was Ricky Martin . No love for Ricky.
