New York approves ticket scalping

The state of New York has officially legalized ticket scalping, according to various media reports. The bill that was signed into law allows ticket holders to resell their tickets and officially prohibits sports franchises from cancelling season tickets for those who choose to do so. Is this a good idea or a bad one?

Re: New York approves ticket scalping

well i have no problem with it overall, but i see the Catch-22

if the game isnt sold out then they could have bought another ticket and the team makes more

if the game is sold out and the ticket holder cant go it would be an empty seat not buying beer and stuff ........ unless he can sell his ticket he cant use

Re: New York approves ticket scalping

The result is teams like the Yankees trying to set up scalping through their own website, skimming a little profit off the top in the process.

That and you could have forms of Monopoly, where people can buy in large, large blocks key games and resell at much higher prices...unlike a true market free economy, the general public most of the time, does not access to the block of tickets that say a key insider does.

I think if you limit the resale to say 3-4 tickets then, yeah it's a good idea. But not to have a limit, no, it will hurt the general public.

Re: New York approves ticket scalping

Couldn't they very easily have their own personel outside the stadium selling tickets for a higher price when they are in effect "Sold out" ???

Theoretically, yeah. I mean, I don't think there's anything prohibiting that. Might violate some anti-trust or price gouging laws, though,

Re: New York approves ticket scalping

I don't think it is that big of a deal now with ebay, stubhub and others. They are basically ticket scalpers. I can get any ticket I want if I am willing to pay for it.

yeah, but you are adding an additional layer of scalping (potentially one more middle man)...

Not to mention team-run scalping could potentially put all of those places out of business.

Re: New York approves ticket scalping

I guess websites like StubHub and other varities influenced the people in power to change the law. I don't see how it will have a large effect on anything besides at certain events, some people will be CASHING in BIG TIME.
