Re: Rick Mirer?

Welcome to GoTeamsGo, and thanks for joining us!

Check out this clip from an article on Mirer from Irish Illustrated.

Quote:
Mirer is now two seasons removed from playing professionally after a brief stint with the Detroit Lions in 2004. Indeed, he has had time to come back to the campus with his family—wife Stephanie, and sons Morrison, 8, Oliver, 6 and Charlie, 3—since his retirement from professional football.

He attended the home game against UCLA last year with Morrison and Oliver, and the classic game against USC in '05. He also attended the spring game this past April along with about 150 other former Lou Holtz players, who gathered for a festive weekend as the former Irish head coach served as honorary coach in the Blue-Gold Game.

Living in San Diego since his final year in Seattle, Mirer and another NFL quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, are looking at about 90 acres of land in eastern Oregon and Washington where they hope to plant a vineyard and develop some tasty Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah wines.

"It's been a hobby of mine for a while," said Mirer of his dabbling into red wines. "We've decided to make it a little more real."

After a 12-year NFL career with seven teams, Mirer says he is content as a retired football player.

"I had all the highs and lows," Mirer said. "I tell you, I didn't miss training camp, and I don't have any second thoughts. I probably could have hung on for a little longer.

"But I played football for a bunch of years, and I walked away healthy. There are a lot of guys that can't say that, so I feel fortunate in that department."

The Mirers are very content living in San Diego, but when Irish Illustrated caught up with him, they were back at Lake Wawasee in northern Indiana, just a few miles south of his old stomping grounds in Goshen.

His oldest son, Morrison, is about to turn nine and is participating in Pop Warner football in the San Diego area. But the Mirers will find time to return to Notre Dame as often as possible, and will be attending the Notre Dame-UCLA game in Pasadena in October.
