Fall Baseball - Catchers Cameron McConnell was rated by Prep Baseball Report as the top catcher in the Illinois high school class of 2007. In the June MLB draft Cameron was looked at by the Royals and the Astros, but as a Scott Boras advisee, he was passed over by both teams because they would not offer a big enough cash signing bonus to buy him out of his Notre Dame scholarship experience. Cameron had a successful 2007 summer season catching for the Top Tier Elite Select team, which won the Connie Mack Illinois State and North Central regional championships. In the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico, Cameron was in the catcher’s box for every pitch of the four World Series games Top Tier played. In four games the opposition managed a total of only six stolen bases. In eleven World Series plate appearances against 89 - 93 mph pitching, Cameron had one two run homer, four total hits, two sacrifices, one walk and no strike outs, for a total of 6 RBI. His batting average in the series was .500 and his on base percentage was .500, with a series slugging average of 1.250. This is one of Dave Schrage's frosh recruits who signed last November. He should help make up the defensive deficiencies which produced a lackluster 2007 season. |
