A 1-8 record is an absolute embarrassment.

Unhappy Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

These Irish eyes are crying... this is officially the worst ND football season ever. How can this be? What can be done?

I don't know if firing Charlie would help anything now. I am beginning to think the problems run much deeper at ND and the cause of this season go beyond Weis. From some friends I have at ND, it sounds like a lot of recruits for next year are shaky and might go elsewhere. Also, ticket sales are off and revenue is way down. Problem is, it'll be very expensive to buy out Weis' contract and the new coach would have nothing to work with. Further, as much as I hate to admit it, South Bend just is not that great of a place to live. It's hard to get coaches and recruits to go there when the coasts are so much more attractive.

But I have faith. ND has been at the top a long time and it will be back. I just don't know how that will happen.

Tough times for ND fans right now but it will be fixed sooner than later.

Notre Dame has too much tradition and talent to stay in this situation much longer.

I agree this must be deeper than just Weis but am not close enough to the ND program to guess at what is the problem.

Please keep us updated on what you hear about what is going on.

Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

Is it bad to say that I love seeing all of this go on at ND. They have been so overrated for so long. It's sad to see one of the most dominate programs in college football go down the drain, but what do you do?

Will firing Charlie Weis really solve the problem? What will happen when the recruits start jumping ship?

That's just it. A lot of guys are jumping ship because of Weis, fewer than would if he was fired, I'd guess. Notre Dame is still Notre Dame, and there's going to always be a top 10 class there just because there's a large segment of population who want to don those green jersies, take the field in the midst of Touchdown Jesus, hit that "Play Like A Champion Today" sign. Recruiting at Notre Dame is arguably easier than recruiting at any other school.

I agree. They need to do something though. A 1-11 season hurts. And that's what they will be 1-11. Duke will win!!!

Cool Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

Did you hear what Bob Keuchenberg said about Weis?

Quote:
I want to start the movement-Charlie's last name is four letters, and so is ogre, because that is what he is. This man has not been a good...human being might be a little broad...but this man has not been good to anybody who came to Notre Dame. Within the Notre Dame family, when former All-American players say to a man that this guy's an (expletive), and for no reason, to me its karma that he's getting his ass handed to him."

"I was up there two weeks ago for the Michigan State game. He has insulted people. It doesn't matter if your an ex-football player, a regular alumni, what have you. He's been abusive and totally, unneccesarily arrogant to the Notre Dame family itself and it's all coming back in his lap."
He also said that Weis held a gun to Notre Dame's head a year after he got his handsome initial deal, telling ND that he had a great offer from
the New Orleans Saints.

Things like that, more than wins and losses, is why I'm convinced he's on his way out. Of course, 1-10 doesn't help his case either.

Cool Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

For those who are interested in listening - Keuchenberg was on the Mike and the Mad Dog radio show yesterday. I'd venture to say that Keuchenberg won't be going to Weis' house for Thanksgiving.

Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

From the looks of Weis, you wouldn't want to get between him and a turkey dinner any time soon to begin with.

Cool Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

There must be something to these charges by Keuchenberg. Mike and the Dog invited him on their show to refute this stuff and he hasn't come on.

I personally had the displeasure of introducing myself and my wife and friends to Charlie Weis prior to a game.
And, you are correct in your assessment of some reasons for his problems at ND. I, too, along with several of the parents of a few players discussed following us contact with him how abusive he was to them, how he has treated their sons on the team, and how arrogant they found him to be personally by way of previous contacts with him. This is the main reason some of their sons transfered from ND and others wanted to even though each parent expressed their and their son's love for Irish Football and what ND University stands for. The parents couldn't believe Weis was permitted to behave in such a manner especially as a high profile embassdor of ND. Being highly intelligent people, in my opinion, they gave the consenous they understood that he was hired to be a football coach first and foremost and they would hold their final opinions until he adjusted to ND's expectations and how he did at his chosen task of winning football games.

Re: Fire Charlie Weis!

So if he wins, they'll forgive the fact that he's a creep and has been a beast to their children? Hmm, that doesn't sit too well with me.

That's ND football and most of the "die-hard" fans who value winning above all else. Especially since 95% of them never attended the university and fail to understand the real value of a Irish education and the values it supposedly expouses. Hell, I bet 95%+ haven't even been on campus or attended a game!
