| Weis: Clausen's alcohol arrest an honest mistake Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said Monday that quarterback Jimmy Clausen's citation for transporting alcohol as a minor is a simple case of ignorance of the law."I think it's out of ignorance -- and by ignorance I mean lack of knowledge," Weis said. "I don't think he was defiantly trying to get himself into trouble with the law." Weis said he himself didn't know it was illegal for someone who's underage -- Clausen is 19 -- to drive someone who is of legal drinking age to a liquor store to buy alcohol. He used the analogy of a friend of his son's driving the coach to a supermarket to buy a six pack of beer. Still, Weis said it was a mistake. "Did he have bad judgment, being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Absolutely. You can't sit there and say when something happens that nothing happened," Weis said. | Re: Weis: Clausen's alcohol arrest an honest mistake Claussen discussed the arrest, among other things, at a recent press conference. "In regards to my recent legal issue, I used bad judgment in being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I've learned from my mistake," the ND quarterback said. "I'm obviously now more informed about the Indiana state law... I will have no further comment about these issues, and I'm here to talk about Notre Dame football." I deal with youth and the law for forty years and I didn't know it was illegal in the State of Indiana. Someone just wanted to make an issue out of it because he was a ND football player, IMHO. |

| Re: Weis: Clausen's alcohol arrest an honest mistake Wait a moment... we all know if your under 21 no Alcohol period. Besides a kid with a bright future knows stay away from things that can derail your life for example: Ricky Williams- POT Leonard Little- DUI Manslaughter Ray Lewis- Hanging out after curfew [lucky he didn't pull time for murder] Mike Vick- Women[STDs] and Dogfighting. Ray Carruth- Women/Child Support Murder Shawn Kemp- Is you my baby daddy? Kerry Collins- Alcohol Chris Benoit- Steroids & Murder & Suicide OJ- need I say more... When you are a star athelete and represent a program you cannot go back to anonimity. You will always be in the spotlight for good or ill. Life has its own rewards fame can be a wonderful thing that gives you everything you ever dreamed of. Infamy on the other hand shatters lives but it all starts the moment they commit to these big schools. So in my humble opinion they need to have ethicis classes for athletes beginning in highschool. The need to teach these kids how to handle themselves before they embarass themselves. |

| Why is it the responsibility of high schools to teach athletes right from wrong? Where are the parents of these youngsters? Speaking from personal experience, I can say it is possible to raise four youngsters and send them off to get their college degrees - yes, one of them plays baseball at a Division 1 university - without any run ins with the law, the neighbors, their coaches or anyone else. It's hard work, and sometimes inconvenient, but the values of the parents have greater influence than any other single factor in instilling the values of the athletes. If your athlete goes off to college and gets into trouble with booze, guns, gambling, sex, drugs, or anything else you might add to the list, it most likely is not the fault of his or her high school. |
