| Ticket Out? Sports is not a ticket out of the ghetto. Witness Michael Vick, who ended up right back there despite his talent. A Notre Dame education might be a ticket out of the ghetto, though, and it seems some players are willing to throw that away for a few more minutes out on the playing field at some other school. If parcitipation in team sports through grade 12 doesn't teach a youngster that loyalty to the team is more important than personal self interest, it isn't because coaches didn't try to instill some values in their players.
It's because there is no substitute for parental supervision and example. Schools are responsible for teaching readin' writin' and 'rithmetic. Participation in sports is a privilege, like any other extracurricular activity. A boy who plays sports because he wants to "be like Mike" with loads of cash, fast cars and faster women, and not to help his team excel, is doomed to crawl away from his crashed up Lamborghini in the middle of the night. |
