Notre Dame?s Defense, is it scheme or talent?

Log onto any Notre Dame football board these days and this much is clear. ND fans want a change at the defensive coordinator position. Will that change ND’s defense into a top 20 unit? Certainly other schools have done it. UCLA’s defense has seemingly been born overnight, and Michigan is clearly a different unit than they have been in recent years. All the examples have me thinking. Is Rick Minter a poor defensive coordinator, or is ND’s experience lacking at certain positions?

Yeah, lots of people calling for Notre Dame to fire Rick Minter, but I'm one of those who believe it's a lack of talent, not a scheme problem. I believe it's premature to make a change at the defensive coordinator position. What do you guys think?

I'm with you. No scheme works without talent.

Yep, just look to the NFL's Colts and Browns for examples. Defensive geniuses coaching, but the guys in the jersies just aren't getting the job done. I strongly believe the same is the case in South Bend - not that Minter's a defensive genius, but he's a good enough coach. Notre Dame just needs to upgrade, especially in the secondary, where they need more speed and better technique.

I agree, outside of getting Mike Shula or Romeo Cornell, Notre Dame should stick things out. The recruiting classes of the past two years have been outstanding in comparison to previous years. Next year will be a tough year with everyone they loose, but Notre Dame shouldn't freak out, just let things happen. Remember all of these big names on defense the last couple year have been recruited by Minter. They obviously like the guy and what he stands for, being willing enough to play for him. Give him time, good things will come....

Agree completely, domer. But I'm not sure losing some of these guys will be a bad thing, not totally. Sure, the new guys will lack experience, but I have the feeling the Irish will be gaining much needed speed, provided these youngsters are the athletes they're professed to be.

Weak adjustments on teh part of the coaches - seems like offense use the same plays and exploit the same weaknesses and nothing has been addressed.
As for talent - I'd rather Zibby become a pro boxer than come back - he couldn't cover my grandmother.
Perhaps Weiss will realize that as a head coach he might have to think about Special teams, defence and somehting other than going for it on 4 and 9!
