Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl

It looks like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will receive an invitation to play in the BCS Sugar Bowl on January 3rd at 8pm eastern.

Word earlier said the Rose Bowl would go for a LSU vs. USC match-up. The Orange Bowl looks like a ACC/Big East match-up. That leaves the Sugar Bowl available.

And who would their opponents be? Well, it looks like The Irish will play Florida or Michigan, depending on who doesn't get the National Title bid.

Does anyone think the Irish can contend with the Gators or Wolverines?

Re: Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl

Hmm... not so sure that the Rose won't take Michigan and leave LSU for the Sugar. But it does seem like it's a done deal that the Irish will be there. I wouldn't mind seeing them against Florida to see how they match-up, but Michigan stomped a mudhole in them earlier this season. I can see a rematch of a close game, but I don't know about a rematch of a blowout.

Re: Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl

Good point. On second thought, if Florida plays Ohio State I could see the Rose Bowl going for a SC/Michigan game.

An Irish/Tigers ball-game would be great. I would love to see how Quinn can play agsint the LSU defense.

And it will, in fact, be Notre Dame vs. the LSU Tigers in the Sugar Bowl. Predictions?

Re: Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl

I think this game will be better than a lot of anti-Notre Dame people will tell you it will be. LSU has the most talented defense that Notre Dame will have faced. Their offense is not as strong as say those of USC or Michigan, but they still have a lot of weapons. This week, Charlie Weis said he will take a different approach to this bowl game versus last year. He will not hold any two a day practices before the game and will give his team more time off so they feel completely refreshed. I think this game will be a very close game. I honestly feel that this one will come down to the end,

Notre Dame 24 LSU 21

It should be a good game. Out of loyalty to the SEC, I'll
say LSU 28 Notre Dame 24.

Post Can the Irish beat LSU?

Quote:
Notre Dame concedes nothing against LSU
San Jose Mercury News, USA - 13 hours ago
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - By now the civilized football world knows that Notre Dame is expected to get thrashed by Louisiana State in the Sugar Bowl. Yes, Irish coach Charlie Weis has seen the odds (Notre Dame is a 9 1/2-point underdog), heard the predictions and recognized the NCAA record-tying eight game bowl losing streak.

He has a message for you - don't sweat it. The Irish aren't. "If you think we're going down there to get our (rumps) beat, you're wrong," Weis says. "That's not our intention. We're not throwing in the towel. We're going in with the intention of winning."

Sure, elite teams seem to bring out the worst in Notre Dame (see the lopsided defeats to Michigan and USC for insight). Yes, LSU rivals, if not surpasses, those teams in speed and athleticism.

The Tigers (10-2) have a powerhouse defense and a quick-striking offense. With a more home friendly SEC schedule, they might be facing Ohio State in the national championship game rather than SEC rival Florida. Rather than run from that reality, Weis embraces it. He will use it as part of his verbal needle arsenal to try to motivate the Irish to a season-best performance.

Post College Football: Irish hope to silence critics

College Football: Irish hope to silence critics
Salt Lake Tribune, UT - 3 hours ago
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame safety Chinedum Ndukwe understands why many consider the No. 11 Fighting Irish underdogs entering their Sugar Bowl matchup against No. 4 LSU.
''Everyone's saying we have no chance,'' Ndukwe said. ''I guess we haven't given them any reason to think otherwise with the two big games that we've played in.''
The Irish (10-2) are 0-2 this season against teams ranked in the top 10, losing 47-21 to Michigan in the third game of the season and 44-24 to USC in the regular-season finale.
''I think some people have the right to give us the stigma that they have because of what we've done in the big games and how we've performed,'' tailback Darius Walker said. ''I think we're using that to fuel our motivation.''
Not everyone on the Irish is as understanding as Ndukwe and Walker about the Irish doubters.
''I get tired of hearing how bad we are,'' quarterback Brady Quinn said. ''I mean, that's all people seem to be saying sometimes. Notre Dame is one of those universities where it's kind of like either you love it or you hate it. It's tough because you've got to deal with the criticism all the time.''

Not a lot of people picking Notre Dame in this one. Does that play in their favor?

Re: Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl

This makes 9 straight bowl losses for the Irish, right? This one was particularly tough to watch. That defense was clueless; I mean, I knew they were overrated... but I didn't expect this to wind up QUITE so bad. Hopefully some of the talent coming in next year has a little more team speed and can hang with some of these faster teams.

Up to the minute news about the Notre Dame football team.

Quote:
Irish Fall In Sugar Bowl :: Walker rushes for 127 yards in the loss.
JaMarcus Russell thoroughly outplayed Brady Quinn and made a compelling case that the mammoth quarterback's next pass should come in the NFL.

Re: Irish Fall In Sugar Bowl

Notre Dame was an embarassment to say the least! One of our local nursing homes could have played better.
