John Carlson Finalist For The Mackey Award :: Senior tight end in the running to be named the top collegiate tight end in the nation.
Notre Dame senior John Carlson is one of three finalists for the 2006 John Mackey Award announced today by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame Tight End John Mackey.

John Carlson Named To ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-America Team :: Senior tight end boasts a 3.59 GPA, including a 3.8 GPA during the 2006 spring semester.
Notre Dame senior tight end John Carlson has been named an ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-American. Carlson becomes the 179th Academic All-American in Notre Dame's history and 30th member of the Fighting Irish football team to receive the honor and the first since Tim Ruddy in 1993.

Not one, but two honors announced for the Notre Dame tight end today - he's a Mackey award finallist as well as a first team Academic All-American in ESPN the Magazine. He has a 3.59 GPA as well as 46 catches for 621 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Phenominal season. Think he'll win the Mackey?

As soon as Fasano announced he was coming out early, I didn't know what we were going to do for a tight end. Then Carlson stepped in and turned out to be a stud. Quickly we were thinking, Fasano who? He has a fifth year available if he wants to use it, hopefully he will cuz the Irish are going to need anything they can get next year.
