Re: Notre Dame midseason report card

According to this story, "The ninth-ranked Fighting Irish (5-1) have their second best record since 1998... They have one more victory than they did last season after six games and are at exactly the same spot in the rankings. That seemed unlikely following a 47-21 loss to Michigan three weeks ago."

So, what grade would you give the Irish through six games?

I would say that they are an excellent, but not superior, football team at this point in time. The thing that Charlie Weis has instilled in them, as the Michigan State game clearly showed, is to play as hard as they can until the clock reaches zero. This is what the service academy teams do, regardless of their talent levels, and it is the hallmark of a champion. It will undoubtedly result in a win in a game they should have lost at least once a season.

Re: Notre Dame midseason report card

Is Notre Dame good enough this year to beat USC in Los Angeles is the only question left for the season. The biggest problem facing Notre Dame though is the playoff system still sucks, leaving no game against Florida or Ohio State in a playoff for the National Championship.

Re: Notre Dame midseason report card

Florida could lose as soon as this coming Saturday, when they play Auburn. The Tigers are, of course, coming off of that surprising upset loss to Arkansas, and they'll be very ready for the Gators. Ohio State could lose to Michigan, but that will be several weeks from now. Southern Cal will be a very difficult game for ND. They are still very talented, and it's their rivalry game too. There's just no way they will be looking past that game. I would rate it as a tossup. The Irish didn't help themselves by not just losing to UM, but getting absolutely trounced on their own field. But, now they know they have to win all the remaining games to get where they want to be. It's the toughest possible assignment.
