I hate to say it, Irish fans, but Mike Lucas makes a lot of good points in the above article. Notre Dame is ranked 94th in the country in scoring defense, 92nd in rushing defense, 108th in rushing offense. Miami of Ohio has given up fewer points to their opponents than Notre Dame has, and Illinois has done a better job of stopping the run, at least statistically. Yet the Irish are 3-1 and have a very good chance of finishing 10-1 this season. Just how good of a team are they, really, though?

The Irish are bound to improve on these rankings! You know the rushing offense is going nowhere but up. They have played some tough teams thus far, and to be 3-1 isn't really all that bad. The MSU win is going to energize a 7-0 run over the weeks ahead to 10-1. At that point the Irish will face a showdown against USC, and then we'll see exactly how good they are. Hopefully a major bowl date would follow, and maybe another test against Ohio State?
