| CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the second straight year, Chad Flack homered to send North Carolina to the College World Series. Flack's tiebreaking two-run shot in the seventh sent the Tar Heels to a 9-4 win over South Carolina on Sunday night in the deciding game of their best-of-three super regional series. Flack - whose two-run game-ending homer in last season's super regional at Alabama gave the Tar Heels their first CWS berth since 1989 - came through with another crucial shot in the postseason. This time, his towering drive to left-center off reliever Will Atwood snapped a 4-4 tie. Flack's seventh homer of the season and first since May 19 came just in time for North Carolina (53-13), which snapped a nine-game homer drought and now will face Mississippi State in Omaha. | OMAHA, Neb. -- North Carolina is fast becoming expert at comebacks. The Tar Heels spotted Mississippi State a four-run lead Friday night before cobbling together a six-run sixth inning to win 8-5 in the College World Series. North Carolina has had to rally for five of its six wins in the NCAA tournament -- a trend coach Mike Fox has found perturbing yet pleasing. "I'm not sure how long we're going to be able to keep doing that," Fox said. "It seems to be our M.O. It's going to come back and get us here one of these days. But we'll enjoy it for now." North Carolina (54-13) will play Sunday against Rice (55-12), which beat Louisville 15-10 in the day's first game and Mississippi State (38-21) will meet Louisville (46-23) in an elimination game. | OMAHA, Neb. -- North Carolina is proving the adage that good pitching beats good hitting any day. The Tar Heels' starters had been anything but good the last two weeks, and Louisville had the hottest hitting team in the NCAA Tournament. But Luke Putkonen and two relievers limited the Cardinals to three hits, and the Tar Heels won 3-1 in a College World Series elimination game Tuesday. The Tar Heels also had three hits but they made two runs that scored on a Louisville throwing error stand up to advance to a Wednesday game against Rice. North Carolina (55-14), the 2006 runner-up, would have to beat the Owls twice to win their bracket and return to the best-of-three championship series, which starts Saturday. Rice beat the Tar Heels 14-4 the first time they played Sunday. ESPN - NCAA Recap: North Carolina Tar Heels at Louisville Cardinals |
