John Schoop to be Named Offensive Coordinator

Quote:
John Shoop has been hired as North Carolina's offensive coordinator, sources close to the situation confirmed to Inside Carolina on Thursday. Shoop is currently in Chapel Hill and an announcement from the University is expected in the coming days.

Shoop finished the 2006 season as the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders, replacing Tom Walsh for the last five games of the season. He began the year as the tight ends coach.

Despite only being 37 years old, Shoop has nearly a decade of NFL experience, as a quarterbacks coach (Carolina, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Oakland) and offensive coordinator (Chicago, Oakland) -- both roles he'll have on North Carolina's staff.

His biggest success was with the Chicago Bears, where he ran the offense for a 13-3 NFC Central Division title-winning team and coached Pro Bowl wide receiver Marty Booker and Offensive Rookie of the Year Anthony Thomas. He was also a staff member on the 1996 Carolina Panthers team that reached the NFC Championship Game.

John Shoop Bio
2006 - Tight Ends Coach/Offensive Coordinator, Oakland Raiders
2005 - Quarterbacks Coach, Oakland Raiders
2004 - Quarterbacks Coach, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2001-03 - Offensive Coordinator, Chicago Bears
1999-00 - Quarterbacks Coach, Chicago Bears
1997-98 - Quarterbacks Coach, Carolina Panthers
1995-96 - Offensive Quality Control Assistant, Carolina Panthers
1992-94 - Graduate Assistant, Vanderbilt
1991 - Quarterbacks Coach, Dartmouth
College: University of the South, Quarterback
Well, the coaching search is almost complete at UNC. We must like the raiders because our offensive and defensive coordinators both came from Oakland.

Coker is looking for a head coaching job. He is up for the job at Minnesota. So that is the reason that he is not coming.
