Re: Lucas: UNC Basketball Mailbag Jan. 9 Our favorite shoe responses were from readers bringing up an old-school part of Carolina shoe lore. Tar Heel letterman Michael Norwood mentions the Carolina blue suedes worn in the 70s. He also adds, "The coolest uniform accessory ever was the jersey number on the socks as seen on Ford, Davis, etc." You can easily see the blue shoes, plus a hint of the socks with the numbers, on this Sports Illustrated cover. You can also check page 135 of this year's media guide for a view of the socks as modeled by Dennis Wuycik. Now that is cool...numbers on the socks...what more could you want out of life?

Re: Tar Heel Folklore and other tales... I've known Joe Quigg my whole life, grew up with his daughter and am originally from Fayetteville. His daughter and I went to kindergarten through high school together. Over the years, we watched the 1957 film of that storied first championship. It was played before I was born. Every time we watched it, we'd be on the edge of our seats. UNC took down Wilt Chamberlain in that game-Kansas. You should see how short the shorts were and it was before elastic so they wore belts. But Joe Quigg was fouled, mauled really, went to the line to shoot a pair. Imagine the pressure since there was virtually no time left in the game. You can even tell on that fuzzy screen how utterly sweltering it was in old Woolen gym. One tied it, two won the game. I mean it was so funny how we would leap out of our seats at a game that had been played decades before. It really was one of the greatest games of all time. My Dad remembered it as one of the first games ever filmed. My Dad had played on the radio at Davidson as a point guard from 1940-1944.

Re: Tar Heel Folklore and other tales... I did read that book and it was good. I then passed it on to my Dad. He knew and knows many people in the book since he played for Davidson. And back in the early days, Davidson vs UNC was a huge rivalry. I knew some of the people as well which was pretty neat.
