| Kenan Stadium Expansion Quote:
Kenan expansion in planning stage
Baddour: No timeframe for project
Robbi Pickeral, Staff Writer
North Carolina athletics director Dick Baddour hopes the university eventually will tear down the old football field house, fill in the east end zone with academic support space, and add luxury boxes to the south side of Kenan Stadium.
But Baddour said it could take a while.
Although the Chapel Hill Town Council on Monday approved a plan that would add about 8,800 seats to the stadium, Baddour said there are a "whole lot of steps" the plan has to go through before construction can begin. Those steps include a more detailed financial analysis, approval by the Board of Trustees, and likely a fundraising effort by the Educational Foundation, also known as the Rams Club.
"We're still in the planning stages," said Baddour, adding that the council's approval was part of modifications to the university's master building plan. "The next phase is to get some better drawings of what we think it [the expansion] would look like. Then we need to do a more thorough analysis of what would go in there, and then get some ballpark of what it would cost."
| I'm telling you, it's the most beautiful stadium in the nation. And now, adding about another 10,000 seats to make capacity 70,000. That will be great. |
