winners, losers at scouting combine

The final chapter of the 2008 NFL combine was written Tuesday afternoon when the last group of defensive backs walked off the turf at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Now that the measurements have been recorded, the 40s have been run and the interviews completed, teams will digest the players who impressed and those who did not. Here's a quick overview of the headliners from this year.

Quote:
Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State: His performance at the combine could be one for the ages. He ran faster than many of the defensive backs, was stronger than most of the offensive linemen and looked as athletic as anyone presently on the roster of the Indiana Pacers. Gholston came to Indianapolis as a fringe top 10 player but left as a possible top-six pick.
Hate to say I told you so, but...

Lots of surprise players turning heads out there, from the looks of it. Jeremy Zuttah of Rutgers sounds like a keeper. Michigan State WR Devin Thomas could sneak into the first round after impressing in pass catching and speed drills. And of course we've all already heard about Mendenhall and McFadden impressing.

I also heard that DeSean Jackson of Cal had a strong workout at the combine and could be a first-rounder.

Disappointed at Mike Hart's performance; with so many highly touted RBs in the draft, I have to wonder if he'll even be a first-day pick now after running a 4.7. Still, based on his career at Michigan, I think he can be a starting tailback in the NFL.
