Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Good story over at SI.com about the NFL rookies who should have the biggest impact, fantasy wise, during the upcoming season. Among those the author recommends looking at are Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Vernon Davis, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, Santonio Holmes and Lawrence Mulroney. Who do you guys think are the fantasy players coming out of last weekend's draft?

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

I don't think there's much of a question regarding Vernon Davis. He should find his new best friend in Alex Smith early on in camp and the two should have a fun season all the way through. They may not win a whole lot of games, but Davis should get his fair share of TDs.

Bush is interesting b/c he'll be doing a plethora of duties for the Saints. RB, WR, KR/PR, whatever else they can find for him. His arrival almost certainly means a decrease in Deuce's fantasy stock. Although in the previous 2 years, I've drafted Deuce and he's been hurt a long time...so I'm through with him either way.

I wouldn't take Bush because he's not an every down back and will lose carries at the goal line.

2) Is Vince Young going to even play?

3) Dennis Green has already said that Kurt Warner is the starter and that Lienart's goanna sit..Cutler won't play either.

4) If you draft Corey Dillon, then take Muroney - and I would take Holmes only as a 4th or 5th receiver.

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Bush may not be an every down back, but he'll get a lot of catches and has the potential to take it to the house every time he touches it. Davis and Holmes are both immediate starters, unlike Young and Leinart, so there's definite high scoring potential there. What about Moss or Chad Jackson - anyone think they might be good fantasy picks? Who else?

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Maroney, Holmes and Bush (Obviously) will be the three players worth drafting relatively early for fantasy football. I need to see Alex Smith throw for over two hundred yards in a game before I can draft one of his passing options. If forced into the situation, I might consider drafting Leonard Pope before Vernon Davis. Not that I think Pope is more capable but just The Cardinals are able to utilize him more efficiently.
Chad Jackson is definitely worth the gamble of drafting late and Leinhart and D'Angelo WIlliams could turn out to be absolute steals.

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Bush has a bright future in the NFL. I still have question marks about a few players but I am sure he will be able to adjust to professional tackles. And if he doesn't, it would be the first time the Texans did anything right (by passing him up).

Here are my top two questions:
1)As a long-time Jets fan I have been wondering, is D'Brickashaw Ferguson worth it?
2)Leinhart was drafted a little too late in the draft. Does that mean something?

Cool Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

I took flyers on Caddie Williams and Benson and Ronnie Brown last year and they paid off...I like to take the rookie backs whenever the top tier backs are off the board...Bush I'd take as my second or third back...he will make the most out of his touches...

The only rookie QB I ever drafted was Peyton Manning in a keeper league...still got him...If Young or Leinhart are available really late, I will take them as a 3rd QB...I got Manning...sooo its not a big gamble.

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Cedric Benson paid off? Why did Chicago draft a running back last year anyways?
No D'Brickshaw Ferguson was not worth it, considering scouts are suggesting that Nick Mangold (The Jets second first round pick) is better at his possession than Ferguson is at his right now. Which implies The Jets drafted him on potential, and I am never a big fan of drafting strictly on potential, particularly when we are talking about offensive lineman.
Leinhart could be a good last round pick in a fantasy draft, depending on how many people are in your league, but I am going to hold off on him this upcoming year since he probably will not be starting.

Not Benson...the point was I took Wiiliams, Benson and Brown ...and it (overall) paid off...I like rookie backs after I have selected my two starting backs...its a gamble ...but Williams had a great first half..Brown a terrific second...Benson never did...nor did JJ Arrington for that matter...still, when the season started those two were worth taking a flyer on...

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Arrington was one I took a gamble on. I was convinced he was going to be the best RB drafted last year; a real Rookie of the Year candidate. Whoops. Now a year later he's probably third string, at best.

Re: NFL Draft Fantasy Impact

Cadillac was the one rookie I wanted to draft last year, and he was taken the pick immediately before me in the fifth round (we had 14 people in our league). Despite his lackluster second half of the season it would have been an improvement because my RB's all season were Jamal Lewis, Brian Westbrook (it was my first year of fantasy football and I was under the impression from a friend of mine that we were getting a point for every catch, and we didn't), Stephen Davis (whom I got in the last round) and Travis Henry.
Needless to say I am looking for some redemption in my sophomore campaign. Maroney might go really high for me.
