Re: Racer Duck

This is the first I've heard about it, Charlie. Sorry to hear that you've had problems. I'll be praying for you (the mere fact that Bob is praying should tell you how much this disturbed me) and remember, you more-or-less promised a "meet&greet" when you pull that car of yours over here to Mobile International! I'm gonna hold you to that!

I assume they have you on some sort of moderate exercise regimen. My advice is to do it. When I quit driving I was in horrible shape and one step away from where you are today, or so the doc told me. Now I'm walking around five miles a week and bicycling around 15, plus doing weights and yoga. I'm down several pounds and have dropped my BP and cholesterol meds to very low dosages. If I can, I know for sure a guy like you can do it easy as pie!

Stay well and Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Bob

Re: Racer Duck

Thanks Bob. The Meet and Greet is still on .. we're hoping the mod will last the season and we'll be competitive, now that we have figured out our engine problem. The fact that we're running top 5 times in practice is encouraging. So the plan is to haul the mod to the September Snowflake (pre-qualifying requirement) and if we survive that to be in the Mod show at the Snowball. But we'll need to take out our puny 2bbl motor and put in our SLM open motor to have a ghost's chance at the big show. In fact, it would be awesome just to make the big show, no matter where we finished!!!

Meanwhile, I'm working on getting miles under my tennies. Did 2 laps today (about half a mile.) Feeling better every day. I'm thinking the exercise regimen will be given to me at my check up next week or the one at the end of the month.

Just realized I've left out some necessary info: my fence line is about 1500-1600 feet around .. close enough that one lap is close to 1/4 mile.

The exercise part isn't hard, it's just getting the right motivation.

I got my motivation for a couple extra laps today when I got a call from my son's principal today.

I don't know when the last time you were at Five Flags, Charlie, but they've changed things quite a bit. They now have a retaining wall going all the way around the track. No more missing T1 and suddenly hoping you can get it stopped before you get in the middle of Pine Forest Rd. Ditto T3; you now have to get to the pit via the road, and not just down the hill!

They pull up a no-crap scoring pylon and a new announcer's booth. Plus, they now have stands going all the way around t's a and 2.

The place is looking pretty good.

Actually, I've never been to 5 Flags. But my son has. He was on Bickle's team when Rich won his 5th Snowball and the $100K bonus in '99. Our SLM is a sister car to that one .. it has 2 of those 5 Snowball wins to its credit.

Re: Racer Duck

Health update: Doing well. Walking is much easier and I'm now able to do the full half mile without breathing hard. Hips still protest from time to time, but that's just from inactivity (and maybe a little age )

Since the heart attack, I've finished 2 books (one I was reading [The Invisible - Andrew Britton], started and finished another [The Good Guy - Dean Koontz]) and am now on my 3rd [The Final Warning - James Patterson]. I recommend them all, tho The Good Guy was a little hard to get interested in at the beginning, the mid story and ending were worth sticking with it. If you're familiar with the Maximum Ride series, then The Final Warning is the 4th (and latest) in the series.

I take a short nap (half an hour) after lunch (I'm beginning to enjoy that Spanish custom ) and then take my walk after that (to get the juices flowing again.

I read where gardening is one of the best exercises you can have, so am contemplating getting dirt under my nails (again). But my black clay with its liberal dose of fist-sized flint rocks has proven to be "anti-gardening" in the past, so I'm looking at alternatives.

Got the EMS bill Saturday .. almost had another heart attack: $1715!!! $400 of it was for the 30 miles they drove taking me to the hospital...shoulda taken my car or even my dually!!!

Keep up the good work with the exercise Ducky. The year I retired I decided that I needed to lose weight and start doing some real exercise. Still doing both today. My exercise regime has gotten far more intense that I ever thought I would at this age. I am a few years younger than you but I have to admit that I'm actually enjoying the exercise now. Your key is to just keep doing it and chart your success. When I first started walking, two miles was a chore and left me beat. Eventually I made it up to a bit over 5 miles and then the marathon became a possibility. If you just try to get a bit further each week, it'll happen. You'll get to the point where you look back and wonder why the 1/4 mile was a challenge. I won't tell you what I do now as it might discourage you. I will say that I am running and in Jan I couldn't do a 1/4 mile with huffin and puffin. Remember to stay hydrated and keep telling yourself that you can in fact do it. It's all to your benefit.

Thanks Steve.

Don't know if my ankles and knees will be able to handle running without a major weight loss (I've been working on that, but the missing component has always been the exercise.)

My new goal is 50 lbs in 12 months (just reset from the 60 lbs in 12 months previous goal that I wasn't getting anywhere close to after taking several steps back over the holidays .. after 8 months I'm just 20 lbs lighter.) So, I'm looking ahead to buying a brand new suit, several sizes smaller, for Easter 2010.

Think thats a bill there RD? Check this one out.
When a patient is brought in to Harborview via Northwest Life Flight, it costs $900.00 to take them from the helo to the ER door which is only 300 yards away. They say the big bill is for the EMT's having to wait around for the bird and they have to charge a minimum of 1 hour. Monopoly? I think so.

Duck ... being a professional weight gainer and loser I will tell you that 20 lbs lost is very good. The time factor is always something that we impose and really should not be a factor at all. For many years prior to my retirement I was around 45 lbs heavier than I am today. I went on a better eating/diet/exercise/meeting type plan. If you are honest with yourself the plan works. About 18 months ago I kind of went off the plan and started searching for the weight I had lost. I didn't find it all but I did find some of it and gathered it all up again. In mid Dec I was about 25 lbs heavier than I am today. I decided that I needed to rethink my priorities and get back on track. The fact that I am participating in a marathon helped and the last time I visited my Dr they asked if I would get on the scale. I laughingly said no, but did it anyway. He wasn't upset but I wasn't happy with the numbers. Short of it is do not fall victim to a time frame. Any loss is good. Initially, for me, the running was a physical and mental challenge. My body did in fact hurt but I am beyond that now and am actually looking forward to the race. May 24th is my big day.

Again a big congrats on the current loss. If you've done that much you can do more. Keep the faith and the strong will to continue.

Re: Racer Duck

20 lbs is a darn good weight loss.
The rest of you remember the Duck is walking in 90 degree heat.

You probably wont reach LSC's goals. He has been training for a long time for that Marathon on May 24. (By the way, I hope it rains that day. Just on LSC's section) He has lost a lot of weight and he is up to like almost 5 miles 3-4 times a week. He tells me he doesnt break any speed records but that is excellent for a senior citizen even if he is younger than either of us Duck.
I cant jog or run either. Bad knees. Too many years on a concrete floor in steel toe boots. But if anyone can, its fantastic exercise for health and weight loss. His wife must be very pleased with the new LSC.
Gardening is great exercise, but its hard on the knees also.
