New Forum Feature: Trackback, Pingback, Permalink

I've added a new feature to the threads on all forums. It's a TrackBack/Pingback feature.

If you're a blogger, you may already know about this stuff & understand it. The goal of the feature is to get more exposure for us and to help us attract new members.

2 New Additions to All Threads
On each thread, you'll see 2 new things. 1st, just above the 1st post in a thread, there's a "Trackback" button with a dropdown menu. It may or may not have a # next to the word trackback. 2nd, each post has a "Permalink" link in the top right, next to the post #.

What is Trackback/Pingback?
Many people have tried to explain what trackbacks/pingbacks are and I think they're all confusing. There'a a tutorial here that you should look at.

Trackbacks & Pingbacks are simply certain links between sites. It's an automated way of letting another site know that you're talking about them. Usually this only works between blogs (almost any blog except blogs at blogger.com) but I've added this feature to our forum.

What's a Blog?
A blog is a type of website that's usually used like a diary or journal. It's most commonly created by a single person who posts their thoughts for others to read. You can learn alot more about blogs here.

Why This Can Help GoTeamsGo
1st, if we talk about something on a blog, this will alert them that we're talking about them. That should lead bloggers (and some of the people reading their blogs) to visit GoTeamsGo and see what we said. Hopefully, some of those visitors will register & join our gang.

2nd, this puts a link from a blog to our site. As I mentioned in another thread, links help the Search Engines give us more love. We rank higher and we'll get more visitors if we have more sites linking to us.

What You Should Do
If you read any sports related blogs that you find interesting, start a thread and link to the blog post that was interesting. Don't link to their main blog homepage, link to the page (permalink) for the individual blog post.

Click here for step by step instructions on how to do a trackback.

Our normal policy is that we only allow external links to news sites. This is a slight departure from our normal forum rules. I've let our moderators know that if they see links to blogs, we'll cut some slack on our normal linking out policy. If it's a link to an interesting sports related blog post, we'll let it stand. If the link is spammy or if it just feels too promotional (hey, come visit my new blog about poker!), it will be deleted as usual.

Chime in if you have questions or comments.

Thanks, Ross
