Help Us Grow: Create Threads that Search Engines Like

One of the important ways that you can help me grow GoTeamsGo is by starting new threads that will show up in search engines (SE's) like Google and Yahoo. People will find those threads on the SE's, visit the site and hopefully join our community.

We've done alot of work behind the scenes to build in some search engine friendly stuff but you can help by doing a couple things when you start a new thread.

1) Use interesting, descriptive titles for threads.
When someone sees a link at Google to a thread here, they'll see the title that you created for the thread. Think about what will entice somebody to click on that title. If I'm doing a search on Google for Shaq, which would be more likely to get me to click?
  • Did you see...
    or
  • This is just crazy! I was looking for stuff on the web you won't believe what I found at this pix site...
    or
  • Did you see these crazy Shaq pictures?
    or
  • Crazy Shaq Pictures
If you're Googling for Shaq or Shaq pictures, many more people would click on the last 2 as opposed to the 1st two.

2) Use keywords in your title.
After you know what you're going to write about, think of a 2-5 word phrase that someone might type into a search engine that's related to your thread. Don't knock yourself out but try to use those words in the title of your thread.

See how "Shaq Pictures" would be a keyword phrase? If the title had been something like "This is just crazy," Google won't know that the thread is about Shaq pictures and so nobody will ever find that thread on Google.

btw, shorter is usually better. Google like titles with 3-6 words best.

3) Use keywords in your post
If you came up with a 2-5 word phrase in your title, repeat it in your post. Don't make it sound awkward but SE's like it best if you can reinforce that phrase by using it more than once. Do not go overboard or it'll look/sound bad to readers.

It would be pretty easy to make sure you use "Shaq pictures" once in the body of your post.

I make a living as an internet marketing guy so I've been doing this stuff for about 7 years. While there are a million different things that can make the SE's like us, these suggestions are some simple things that can make a big difference. If you'll follow some of these suggestions, it can really help our community grow. Feel free to ask any questions here or send me a PM.

Thanks, Ross
