Cy Young for Wang?

Whenever a discussion on the AL Cy Young award comes up, one outstanding pitcher is left out of the conversation. Curt Schilling, Justin Verlander, Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, and Jon Garland are always the top picks. But why do we always forget about Chien-Ming Wang of the New York Yankees?

Below, I stack up his numbers ( as of Wednesday) against the other, more popular, picks:

Wins
Wang: 16
Halladay: 16
Santana: 15
Garland: 15
Verlander: 15
Schilling: 14

ERA
Santana: 3.01
Halladay: 3.12
Verlander: 3.42
Wang: 3.66
Schilling: 3.95
Garland: 4.47

Innings Pitched
Halladay: 193.0
Santana: 191.1
Schilling: 186.2
Wang: 186.1
Garland: 165.0
Verlander: 158.0

HR Allowed
Wang: 11
Verlander: 16
Halladay: 17
Santana: 21
Garland: 23
Schilling: 26

Even if Wang doesn't lead each category, he's at least in the top 4.

The only real difference between Wang and the rest of the group is the strikeouts. Wang only has 62 K's, far behind the rest of the group ( Garland is second with 85).

Is this a good reason to deny Wang the award?

"The Cy Young Award is an honor given annually to the best pitchers in the Major Leagues."

What's your opinion?

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

sure there is reasons to deny him, santanna leads in K's second in innings pitched, and a start away from having 16 with halladay and wang, and he he and loriano(Sp?) have carried the twins into the wildcard, without santanna the twins are screwed. I also think people see the cy young as a pitcher mvp and soemtimes votes can be entered that way. In that case ill take santanna.

With that said Wang, has a strong case, but i dont see him winning it. But if you want an argument for the k's, wang will never have those k's he relies on his defense, look at his ground ball outs, he is always one pitch away from getting out of a jam with that splitter.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

I think that Chien-Ming Wang is a possible contender for this year's AL MVP Award, due to his stellar performances on the mound this season. However, I think Johan Santana and Roy Holladay have the best chance of taking the Award home. All of these pitchers have thrown their hearts out and should be commended for their effort.

Cool Re: Cy Young for Wang?

I think it should go to Mariano Rivera.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Mariano Rivera and Johan Santana are my favorite pitchers on the mound, currently. I would like to see the AL MVP Award go to one of them, even though I have no problem seeing it go to Justin Verlander of the Tigers. I agree with MervinOut, that Verlander has been the main contributer to their success. I am sure that Verlander will walk away with the Rookie of the Year Award though, if Francisco Liriano doesn't steal it from him.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

This award is now between Halladay and Santana, with Santana having the edge because of the strikeouts and ERA edge.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

No way Wang should win the Cy Young with an ERA that high. No reason Halladay or Santana shouldn't win it.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

So who gets to keep it? I'm thinking Johan Santana, right now.

YEP, I was headed there...Wang is way more lucky than great...he is a good pitcher but not CY Young material..at least not at this stage in his game.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Wang's home/away splits are a bit disconcerting. He's amazing at Yankee Stadium with a sub-3.00 ERA. However, on the road his ERA skyrockets to a 4.88.

So not what a Cy-Younger would do...

wait a min i didnt say he wasnt cy young material, and remember all pitchers have luck, halladay and satana are going to make you look silly with the K's but wang might become one of the smarter pitchers in MLB. Wang will frustrate you and drive you into slumps. Most pitchers espically younger pitchers think its you and the batter and thats it. Wang knows with a 95 mph splitter that it most likely will be burried into the ground, and that leaves good odd's for 4 if, and 2 battery mates, that the ball wont get threw more times then not. Thats something that makes me think he will be here for awhile and why cashman wont trade him

A bit biased, aren't we?

Anyway, the only chance Wang wins the Cy Young is if he gets 20 wins and both Santana and Halladay doesn't.
That is because Wang still doesn't have the respect from the media (they are the ones voting) than these other guys.

What exactly is Cy Young material?
Last time I checked, Halladay and Wang are pretty much the same type of pitchers, sinkers and getting ground outs.
There is no luck involved in a 162 game season, just sheer talent.
