The way Wang pitched is so different from other pitchers that you cannot judge whether he's good or not easily.

WelcomeToGoTeamsGo dannychou---I'm a Yankee fan but I can't see giving the award to Wang. He's been great but he I would vote for Halliday or Santana. They're a little more dominant then Wang.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Wang has had a stellar season, without a doubt. It just so happens that Roy Halladay and Johan Santana have a better chance of winning the Award since they are the top guys in their rotation. The Yankees also have Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina who haven't been anything special lately. Roy Halladay and Johan Santana are exclusive like Pedro Martinez of the Mets and Justin Verlander of the Tigers.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Here's part of an article by Glenn Giangrande of the YES Network:

Quote:
Entering Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against Detroit, Wang was one of only five pitchers who owned at least 15 wins — Santana, Halladay, and Verlander were also in that group. He beat the Tigers to earn his 16th victory and pull into a tie with Halladay for the Major League lead. If Wang can stay healthy as he establishes his career high in innings pitched, he should get at least five starts in September, giving him a realistic chance at 20 or more wins. That number would dramatically increase Wang's chances of taking home the Cy Young Award.

Among the four top candidates this year, only Santana is having the kind of impact Wang is. Verlander has the most losses of the bunch, and his team has been playing so well all season that it's not hard to imagine the Tigers being where they are even without Verlander. The 23-year-old could also be overshadowed by Detroit's bullpen, which owns the second best ERA in the baseball. As great as Halladay is, his team is on its way to another October vacation. Santana was a huge part of the run that got Minnesota back into playoff contention, similar to how Wang has consistently given the Yankee relievers rest so that they can stay fresh for days in which they are absolutely needed. Wang has worked seven innings or more in 16 of 29 starts and thrown two complete games, far exceeding expectations. That kind of pitching might be par for the course for Santana, a former Cy Young winner expected to win every time he starts, but Wang has shown uncommon poise for a sophomore — especially one plying his trade on the biggest stage in all of sports.

Wang is not nearly as overpowering as his competition — a Pettitte-like 193 hits allowed in 187 innings pitched, and just 62 strikeouts and 49 walks allowed — but there is no one better at forcing groundball outs. Although that may not be the most exciting facet of pitching, voters could be swayed by the type of pitcher who can keep opponents in check without racking up the Ks. Thanks to a biting sinker, no hurler in the game has induced more ground outs than Wang. His 3.08-to-1 groundball-to-flyball is far and away the best in the A.L, the superior offensive league. Grounders have become so much of a story with Wang that his production in those categories must be considered; those numbers should be viewed comparably to the strikeout numbers put up by the other pitchers.

No matter what kind of numbers Santana, Halladay, or Verlander put up over the final weeks of the season, circumstances surrounding the Yankees could elevate Wang's Cy Young credentials. If back-of-the-rotation starters continue to falter, his performances will become more meaningful. If Mike Mussina's groin continues to bark, Wang will be viewed as the starter who needs to carry the load in his place. Halladay and Santana are a pair of aces. Verlander was projected as ace material. Through no fault of his own, Wang barely made it out of spring training as the No. 3 starter in a rotation that boasts one first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the best pitchers of the last 15 years.

Five months later, he has proven that he belongs among the A.L's elite.

Wang doesn't need a Cy Young Award to prove that, but he certainly deserves one.

I think that Wang actually has a very strong case for the Cy Young, especially if he picks up 4 or more wins in the coming month.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Just something interesting to note:

Chien-Ming Wang averages only 3 strikouts per game.

How many did Cy Young average per game? 3

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Those were different times, MVB. I know it is annoying to bring that factor up but Randy Johnson had averaged close to 9 strike-outs per game in one of his good years.

Good point bringing in the legend, Cy Young into this picture.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Interesting article about Wang in the New York Times today.

Quote:
Foes Realize That Wang, With 17 Wins, Is That Good - New York Times
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: September 10, 2006

BALTIMORE, Sept. 9 — Kevin Millar, the famously gabby first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, greeted his old friend Johnny Damon with an expletive during Saturday’s game against the Yankees. Millar was not mad; he was raving about Chien-Ming Wang, whose fastball, Millar exclaimed, was moving by a foot.

Damon said: “That’s good when other teams are saying that. When your fastball moves by a foot, that’s pretty sexy.”

In his latest sterling performance, Wang tamed the Orioles for seven and a third innings in a 3-2 victory at Camden Yards. He improved to 17-5, the same record as the Minnesota Twins’ Johan Santana. The two are tied for the major league lead in victories, and Millar did not seem surprised.

“He doesn’t have that strikeout pitch, but he doesn’t need it,” Millar said of Wang. “He throws ground ball after ground ball. He’s tough to elevate, and it’s tough to get a string of hits together. There’s nothing you can do. He’s one of the tougher ones. He’s been underrated for a long time.”

Wang, 26, is actually in his first full major league season, but his poise makes him seem like a veteran. When Nick Markakis scorched a liner off his backside in the fourth inning, Wang threw two warm-up pitches, stayed in the game and took a shutout into the seventh.

“He doesn’t get rattled out there,” catcher Jorge Posada said. “He just keeps coming.”
I still think Santana win the Cy Young, but that makes Wang a close second.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

Yeah, Roy Halladay just left his ballgame in the first inning with an injured shoulder. If he misses a couple starts, his chances of winning the award will be hurt.

Santana just picked up his 18th win, adding another 11 K's in 6.1 innings.

Re: Cy Young for Wang?

I'm still backing up Johan Santana in his chase for the Playoffs and the AL Cy Young Award. He deserves it the most, among Roy Holladay and Chien Ming Wang. Wang has has a stellar season but nothing that extraordinary. Holladay has also had a solid season for the Blue Jays, but Johan Santana has racked up the better statistics this season.
