Carl Pavano broken ribs

What's this I'm hearing about Carl Pavano - he broke two ribs in an automobile accident, and then lied about even having been in a wreck? How are the Yankees reacting to this news? What's Pavano's future with the team looking like right now?

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

Yeah, he was in a two-car accident ( which he says wasn't his fault), and decided that it wasn't important enough to tell the team. He pitched three minor league starts with the broken ribs, but after feeling a lot of discomfort after his latest start, told Brian Cashman about the incident. Torre says that he doesn't expect Pavano to make the majors this year.

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

I think the situation with Pavano is very disapointing to say the least. Yankee fans are bagging on A-rod for not producing enough, while Pavano has given them next to nothing for the first half of his contract. While you can't blame him for injuries caused last and this year, the car accident in which he did break some of his ribs and not telling the organization about is ridiculous. A little something for Yankee fans to hold on to is that when you look at how good they're doing without their key players, just try to imagine how good they'll be once they get those players back, whether it's this year or next.

Cool Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

Check out the quotes from Jeter and Posada:
The Yankees are looking into voiding the rest of Pavano's four-year, $39.95-million contract, according to a person familiar with the situation. Also, the driver of the garbage truck Pavano hit with his 2006 Porsche is thinking about suing.

The Yankees most likely will have to be satisfied with fining Pavano for not informing them immediately about the Aug. 15 accident and the two broken ribs he suffered. The Yankees' reaction reflects how angry the team is with the righthander, who has not pitched for them since June 27, 2005 because of various injuries.

Details emerged about the accident Pavano hid from the Yankees until Monday, when pain in his ribs forced him to come clean. According to a report by police in West Palm Beach, Fla., Pavano crashed his Porsche into DeLaura's truck on a wet road at 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 15, causing $30,000 in damage to his car and $20,000 to the truck.

Pavano pitched later on Aug. 15, throwing four scoreless innings for Class-A Tampa. He pitched two more times after that and had progressed to the point where the Yankees were considering him for a major-league start.

"It's very disappointing," Torre said before the Yankees game with the Tigers was rained out last night. "I know we've been teased a few times and it certainly hasn't come to fruition. It's frustrating, I guess is the best term to use."

Reaction from his teammates ranged from anger (Jorge Posada) to indifference (Derek Jeter) to sarcasm (Johnny Damon).

Said Posada, "I've got nothing to say. We've got a lot more important things to worry about than Carl Pavano now."

Jeter, the Yankees' captain, said, "I haven't been sitting around saying, 'When is Pavano coming back?' It's not a letdown if you weren't counting on it."

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

Yep, looks like Pavano's burned his bridges. Can't see him coming back to NY after this. Will another MLB team take a flier on him?

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

why not im sure you can get the yanks to eat 10-12 mil of the remaining 20, a team like the dimondbacks could take him, he has shown he can pitch in the nl, its a small market, and he only has to pitch like a 4mil a year pitcher to make the trade worth it.

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

Apparently, the word is he's been ordered not to pitch for 2 weeks, and if he winds up coming back to the bigs this season, it'll be as a reliever, according to Cashman. I really don't see them bringing him back, though.

Re: Carl Pavano broken ribs

I doubt he pitches this year. There's a part of me which even doubts whether he'll ever pitch in the majors for the Yanks again. That has to be one signing which was just awful in hindsight. Even Kevin Brown wasn't this bad

But can they trade him? I'm sure if they eat enough money someone will take Pavano and give him a shot.
