Cool Cashman defends Lidle

Brian Cashman got into it with Chris Mad Dog Russo on the radio yesterday after Russo said that Lidle wasn't very good. Here are 2 links:

The actual interview if you have Real Player and a story about it from the NY Post.

ah the one thing i miss about being at school is listenign to these to knuckle heads talk to cashman, cause they always battle it out with him. They never attack him, but they do attack the moves he makes. He does a good job of giving it back and ti makes for good radio. But cashman is a wirery fella. he doesnt get pushed around by the boss and he wont be pushed around by these to guys

Having said all that, Lidle is still an 8-7 pitcher with an ERA awfully close to 5.00...Do you really think that's the best Cashman could do?...

Re: Cashman defends Lidle

i think lidle is better then what they had including jaret wright i hate him. The question is who could you of gotten without trading (hughes, duncan, tabetta( the of))

For what was avaible i like the move dont think there was much else to get my big concern as usualy is the yanks getting another NL pitcher it hasnt worked in the past but then again those pitchers were usually good b4 the yanks got him who knows maybe this will be the bazarro world effect, and lidle wins 4 or 5 start. One could wish right

Well, that's the rub isn't it. Cashman went middle of the road...I would have gone a bit higher maybe even enticed Maddux (its a stretch, but the guy has some innings left) if I was playing for the playoffs this year....or brought up what's in the farm if I am playing for the future...I think the guy just played it as safe as he could...and that don't yield champions...

Re: Cashman defends Lidle

if cashman had his way i belive he would be rebuilding this team, i think he was content if he didnt make the playoffs with the leaps and bounds his young players took. But you know the BOSS there is no new season around the corner its always NOW

Now see, that I believe...good point... I really think he has his mind on rebuilding and is trying to please the Boss without damaging the future.

Re: Cashman defends Lidle

I heard the interview live yesterday and it was great radio. Cashman is such a pro, Mad Dog is a yankee hater which makes it all the more greater. Still odd to attack a GM on moves he makes thinking he'll let you call his players horrible. But still, great radio.

I'm still waiting for Russo to take Lidle to task for the comments he made on Bonds but letting Giambi (his pal) slide. That should be interesting...assuming Russo does do it.

Re: Cashman defends Lidle

Gotham, I do think that Lidle was the best Cashman could have gotten... Who else was there?

Kyle Lohse - much worse then Lidle... ( ERA upwards of 7)

Greg Maddux - wanted to go west, not east

Oliver Perez- 2-10, 6.60 ERA, sent to the minors by the PIRATES

Kip Wells- injury-prone

Barry Zito- no way the A's were giving him up so soon

Livan Hernandez- Washington was too busy looking into Soriano offers to care about trading him

Jason Vargas- ERA of 7.33, more walks then K's, more hits then innings pitched

I think Cashman did the best he could... Lidle isn't as bad as you make him out to be. He's not an ace, but he's better then what the Yankees had.

Lilde throws strikes, he has almost a 3-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

He is 4-1 with a 3.75 ERA since July...

Some miscellaneous stats on Lidle:
(This Year)

When ahead on the count 1-2, batters hit only .082 against him. ( in the same situation, batters hit .216 against Ponson and .178 against Wright)

Leadoff batters hit only .222 against Lidle ( compared to .343 against Ponson and .293 against Wright)

Number 2 hitters bat .276 against Lidle ( compared to .303 against Ponson and .299 against Wright)

With bases loaded, batters hit .000 against Lidle ( compared to .262 against Ponson and a sick .367 against Wright)

Lidle has only pitched 5 or less innings, 3 times this year. ( compared to Wright's 10 times and Ponson's 8 times)

Career stat:

2-0 in 2 starts at Yankee Stadium

Re: Cashman defends Lidle

The question should be whether or not Lidle will be getting a start in the playoffs (assuming they make it). Figure Johnson, Mussina and Wang would start. Maybe in a 7-game series, Lidle would make one start.

Obviously the move was made to fix the rotation down the stretch. And who knows what negotiations involved with the Phils and Yanks if Lidle's involvement was indeed key. However, I still think Kip Wells was the top 2nd tier pitcher out there (besides Oswalt, Zito and Schmidt).

Yeah Russo once said that he was going to confront Lidle in the Shea Stadium locker room when the Phillies were in town cuz he ripped Bonds and not his former teammate Giambi about steroids...Russo didnt. Its easy to make ridiculous reasons why or why not a team should do something in the vacuum of a sportscasters booth but tougher to actually confront a large athlete about his anger. Lidle im sure would have just laughed a lowlife like Russo off but theres always a chance that the big guy would grab the "mad dog's" oversized nose and start pulling on it humililating him like a playground bully and im sure Chris Russo knows it. Thats why he chickened out at Shea and will only make confrontational promises like Lidle from the safety of his announcers seat. Russo and his fat, grotesque partner are 2 ***holes and I think everyone knows it. Hell! I actually think its part of their appeal to people. (I dont listen to them personally though, I just read the Daily News sportswriters making fun of them all the time.)
