Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

All this says is, Sheffield's not coming back next year. ( And I doubt Abreu will be signed past the end of this year)

Biggest thing- Yanks get Cory Lidle. That's huge. He's pitched decently in Philly, which, as we know, is a terrible pitcher's ballpark. He's gonna really help this team.

Wow of the two, you think Lidle is the better get?...I kinda like Abreu a lot more than a middle tier pitcher.

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

Abreu is basically, a powerless Giambi. ( The only pros I see are his on-base percentage and stolen base numbers)

The Yankees didn't NEED Abreu, but they NEEDED a #4 starter.

That on base percentage is just a tad under Pujols...and translated to potential runs on base...how can they not use that?

And Lidle is an okay 4th...but I would stop my search for a good 4th jsut for him. Surely you wouldn't take him over...say...Zito?

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

Ok, ok, you win! I'd take Zito over Lidle, definitely.

But the Yankees don't NEED Abreu... they're lineup is fine as it is! Damon, Jeter, Cabrera, and Giambi get on base like crazy! Remember, it's only a 9-man lineup.

Look...since you took Zito and all, I will give you that Abreu is better needed elsewhere...we don't want to sound like the Nascar forum arguing over the merits of Jeff Gordon... ...(okay, NASCAR boys and girls, I am just kidding...I love you guys)

Cool Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

I agree with MVP. Where is Abreu going to bat? Damon, Jeter , Giambi are set as 1,2,3...They don't need Abreu. They need pitching. Lidle was a good pickup.

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

Torre's going to put Abreu either in Giambi's 3 spot or keep Giambi where he is and put Abreu behind A-Rod in the 5th spot.
I'm not so sure I want Abreu over Sheffield.
Sheff's got power and he drives in runs and is clutch.

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

I could see Abreu doing a lot of DHing, putting Giambi at first and sgetting Phillips out of the lineup. Then when Cano comes back you would have a line-up of Damon, Jeter, Giambi, A-Rod, Abreu, Cano, Posada, Melky, Bernie. Or Melky and Bernie DHing with Abreu in right.
Lidle is nothing special, and is no better than a number four starter at the very most in the American League.

I doubt the idea of putting Giambi in the field down the stretch is an enticing idea for Torre.

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

The downside of Phillips bat far outweighs the downside of Giambi's glove.

Re: Yankees Trade For Abreu & Lidle

That's what you think.
If Giambi was playing first all this time, the Yankees would be behind Toronto right now in the standings. You like most people have no understanding how important defense is.
Keep Phillips at first, his bat will come around.
Giambi, with all his supposedly better bat, is batting a pathetic .250, give me a break.
The guy can't get a guy in from third with less than 2 out if his life was depended on it.
