Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

Expected announcement to come Friday...Yankees expect to sign Ponson on Friday - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

I guess you can say they're desperate now because why else would you give Ponson another chance? Talk about a hothead.

Ponson could not possibly be any worse than Shawn Chacon.

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

They should have packaged a position player or two (Crosby, Phillips, Stinnett) and gotten one solid SP. They could have aimed for one of the CHW pitchers like Buehrle or Garland, or gotten Roy Halladay (sp). It's clear that with their current pitching rotation they won't be winning a championship anytime soon.

Did you know that the Yanks' starting pitching has a lower ERA then Chicago's starters? The Yanks' pitching staff has allowed fewer earned runs then Boston, Houston, Toronto, LAA, and St. Louis! I think New York's pitching staff is better than thought...

...then along came Ponson.

They couldn't get swatch of Buhrle or Garland's uniform for Crosby, Phillips and Stinett. And why would the Jays trade Ray Halladay to the Yankees?

As far as Ponson goes, desperate times calls for deperate measures.

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

There is absolutely nothing to lose here with Ponson and everything to gain. If he stinks, he cannot be worse than Chacon. And maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle like they did with Chacon last year before he turned back into a pumpkin. We are talking about a fifth starter, not someone who has to be the ace of the staff. Perhaps Chacon can be better coming out of the bullpen, which will help that area.

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

Ponson is a joke, one DUI and he'll be gone...he won't last in new york.

What happened to the days when the Yanks made smart moves...where are the days when we got guys in their prime..or at least in the middle of a few good years. Guys like Cone and El Duque...

I always think the Yanks are going to win, but they need to think about '07 instead of just this year...meaning guys like Cano, Melky, Phillips...even Crosby should be untouchable.

Trade any of the pitchers except, Moose Wang Mo Proctor (this guy is unstoppable when not over used) and Myers (because of the sbmarine delivery - p.s. Joe, use this guy for more than one batter, he is so hard to hit with his delivery!)

I hope Ponson proves me wrong and goes on to be a 2nd half Cy Young...and wins us another ring. Of course then we'll pay out the ass for him in a huge contract for five years and the guy will suck again.

GO YANKS!

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

Look people, Ponson might not be Cy Young but if he gives the Yankees a decent performance from here on out, then we've gained something because they gave up nothing for him.
He will eat up some innings for them and that is very much needed.

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

6 2/3 innings...shaky first, but that was expected. looked good last night, good mechanics and composure on the mound. Keep it up and we've got Moose, Wang and Ponson for the "short rotation" in the play-offs....

P.S. Dying to get Cano back!!

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

Yeah, Ponson didn't do too bad. He made on mistake- the three-run homer by Richie Sexson in the first. But he calmed down and pitched well. ( The fourth run only scored because Torre had the infield pulled in ) Ponson struck out five, walked three, and gave up 5 hits- not too shabby. But what you have to remember, his job ( as a #5) is to just keep his team in the game. He did that. And he pitched into the seventh, which is great for the Yankee 'pen. I was mildly impressed.

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

Just want to add...
Ponson was out on the mound in YANKEE STADIUM...it's tough to go out there with much confidence, especially wearing the pinstripes...
But the Yankees All All-Star defense would make you feel better, right?...
Jeter and Damon were the only 2 of the 8 out there...No A-Rod, No Giambi (not that he's a great fielder), no Matsui, no Sheff, no Cano...and no Posada.

Of course the "back-ups" weren't too bad last night!

Re: Yankees to Sign Sidney Ponson

I wouldn't annoint Ponson a playoff-caliber pitcher just yet but if he can give the Yankees some starts and be at least respectable, that's exactly what they need.
