Smoltz to Yankees?

I know you Yankees fans haven't been real happy with Farnsworth, so maybe this news will bring a smile to your face -- the team is rumored to be in talks with the Atlanta Braves about a possible John Smoltz trade. Smoltz has said he'd waive his no trade clause to go to a contender, and New York certainly fits the bill. Red Sox and Tigers are also said to be interested. So, Yankee faithful, would you like to see Smoltz in pinstripes by the end of the year?

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

Is Smoltz going to lead the 2006 Yankees to a championship? Does anyone think that? I didnt think so. Why do it? The Yankees should officially drop out of MLB and become like a Harlem Globetrotters type team with a set team to beat each night. Oh, I see the problem with that. What team is bad enough to be beaten regularly by the Yankees? Maybe Vince McMahon could send some fakers to take a dive for them. Anyway my "Yankees of Entertainment" is a great idea I think. Believe me that the fans would pack Yankee stadium regardless of what the Yankees and their payroll do. The stadium would be packed even if an alien spacecraft was shooting death rays at the seats...in fact theyd probably cheer louder! See my other posts on the bronx to see why im begging century 21 to get me out of here!!! No matter what the 2006 Yankees do it will not result in them winning the World Series this year and each Yankee fan and foe knows it if hes honest to himself.

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

Smoltz is a class guy and still has something left, but do we really want to see another pitcher pushing 40 on the roster, and at the expense of some young talent. I don't.

Ah! But thats the Yankee way! Depleted the entire farm system for a bunch middle aged relics for a bunch of money and the middle aged fools come to the Yankees "because he wants a World Series ring." Let me tell ya something boys, if you want to play in the World Series dont play for the Yankees.

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

I can understand why the Braves want to get rid of 39-year old ace, John Smoltz.

Below are his numbers for the year to date:

G/GS-17/17
W-4
L-5
S-0
ERA-3.73
WHIP-1.20
K-93
BB-27
ER-46
IP-111

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

I think Smoltz would have another 4-5 wins thus far if the bullpen had been able to hold leads he left with--I can't remember the exact figure, but at least that. The other night he pitched his heart out against the Yankees and left after 7 innings and about 115 pitches leading 2-1. Of course, the pen couldn't hold it. I wonder how things would have turned out if Farnsworth had stayed to close for Braves instead of going to Yanks---

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

The Yankees would acquire Smoltz to get to the playoffs which they wont be attending with or without them. Their farm system has been depleted enough this will only pour gasoline on a flaming problem. Rebuild the damn team with young players...this team aint going nowhere. By the way living in NYC is like dying anywhere else...I WANNA MOVE!!!

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

Actually, New York City is a relatively good area to live and commute in. I wouldn't consider moving all because of one sports team. I know plenty of Mets' fans that reside in the city and they don't experience any kind of discrimination. But then again, they don't publicize it either.

I agree that the Yankees are running out of young players in their farm-system. The Yankees continue to call up the minor leaguers to play in the majors when their veteran starters get either injured or don't perform well. They expect these youngsters to quickly adapt to the big leagues, but then they experience more trouble--they can't.

Robinson Cano is a brief exception for now.

Welcome to the GoTeamsGo Forum, David Murray. We could always use some more baseball fans around here. Be sure to send me a private-message if you have any questions or concerns about the MLB section of the forum. Good luck posting, rookie!

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

Thanks Marc! If Smoltz was willing to go to the Yankees, who do they have in the minors to send in return to the Braves? Detroit might represent a more likely scenario considering Smoltz is from there and that the Tigers could send some young pitching back inreturn. Maybe the Braves will get hot and decide they can still make it as a wild card and keep Smoltz--they are showing some small signs of life!

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

I am sure that the Yankees would be glad to get rid of Aaron Small if the opportunity approaches.

As I said before, David Murray, Smoltz is 39-years old. He should be in retirement at that age. I don't understand why he is still forcing himself to go out on the mound.

There are two possibilities:
a)He has a strong love for the game of baseball
b)He wants the money! (Who wouldn't?)

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

I agree, Smoltz is getting up there in age--and I think you hit it on the head: He still loves the game, loves to compete, and is a warrior when he takes the hill, especially at play-off time. I think he'd love to add another World Series title to his resume before he does retire. As much as he loves Atlanta, you'd think he'd be tempted to want to go to the Yanks for that reason. But if the Braves keep winning, he isn't going anywhere--the wildcard isn't out of reach, and the Braves can make a statement by sweeping the Cards and Reds heading in to the All Star break---

Re: Smoltz to Yankees?

If the Braves lose both Kyle Farnsworth and maybe John Smoltz to the Yankees, who is next? I predict that the Yankees would be interested in acquiring Andruw Jones and some young veterans in the near future. But then again, when has the Yankees gone after young veterans?
