Yankees Win a Thriller!

What a game!!!!! I probably woke up the neighborhood when Jorge went yard in the ninth!!!!

Quick recap:

Shawn Chacon was miserable, giving up 8 runs in just and inning and a thirds pitched! Aaron Small came in in relief and gave up a 3-run home run to Texas' Hank Blalock.

9 to 0, Rangers lead.

But the Yankees chipped away with an RBI single by Cairo, RBI double by Jeter, RBI groundout by Cano, RBI sac fly by Posada, and another unearned run.

10 to 5, Rangers lead.

When Small left the game, Ron Villone came in and served up a double to Blalock. But Cabrera cut the ball off in right field, threw to Jeter who in turn relayed to home plate, and Posada tagged out Teixeira ( this was an incredible play, Teixeira being a big guy and all).

In the sixth inning, Derek Jeter hit a three-run home run, Bernie Williams hit an RBI double, and Miguel Cairo smacked a two-run single to left field as the Yanks took an 11 to 10 lead. New York had staged the biggest comeback (they had done it four other times) in the history of the franchise. (And all this, without Sheffield, Matsui, or Giambi)

11 to 10, Yankees lead.

Joe Torre again went to the bullpen and brought in Scott Proctor who gave up a two-run homer to Brad Wilkerson. (Torre is bent on blowing Proctor's arm) The Rangers led 12 to 11. But in the bottom of the seventh, Jorge Posada brought in Johnny Damon on his second sac fly of the night, and the game was once again tied.

12 to 12.

Mariano Rivera entered the game in the ninth inning, but blew the tie by giving up a RBI double to Rod Barajas. The Yankees had one inning left to stage yet another comeback.

13 to 12, Rangers lead.

Johnny Damon lead the inning off with a sharp single passed the first basemen. The Texas closer, Otsuku, then retired Jeter ( who moved Damon to second) and A-Rod (he is so clutch....not).

Jorge Posada came to the plate with two outs and representing the last hope for the Yankees.

Ball one.

Ball two.

Ball three.

Strike one.

On a 3-1 pitch, Posada hit his second career walk-off home run and the Yankees celebrated at home plate. The game (almost four hours long) will definitely be remembered as a great Yankee classic.

Any thoughts? Anyone else besides me stick around and watch this baby all the way through?

Cool Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

It was 10-3 when I left to play hoops. When I got back in the car, I couldn't believe it was 13-12. I got home just in time to see Jorge's dinger. What a wild game.

Great recap MVB. I shut it off when it was 9-0 but your pics and play by play really gave me a feel for last night. Thank you.

Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

I thought that Tiexeira's play at the plate was a direct attempt to injure Posada. Before anybody says "he was blocking the plate", believe me I have seen plenty of home plate collisions and I know when someone lowers their shoulder into somebody's head what the intent is. You could tell just by the way he got up and walked away. I am so glad that Tiexiera then proceeded to help boot the game away on ground balls that he should have had. This is the same bum that DID NOT GET A SINGLE HIT during the World baseball Classic and almost singlehandedly left the entire roster on base.
I watched the game and then had to go to work, but heard the call on the radio. Only the Yankees could have it play out that the guy that clobbered would come up with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and hit a home run to win it.
This being said, the starting pitching is in disarray, Aaron Small is not a big league pitcher, and Mariano is starting to worry me big time. Andy Phillips is the absolute worst player to ever play for the Yankees, ever, no exaggeration.. I cannot remember the last time he hit the ball. Please, bring up anybody from Columbus that can play first, whether its Carlos Pena or anyone with a first baseman's mitt.

Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

Well, Aaron Small had a rough first inning of relief, but then he settled down and pitched 3 and a third innings of scoreless baseball (including two 1-2-3 innings). And Farnsworth was awesome, throwing only 9 pitches in a 1-2-3 eighth inning ( striking out two).

Andy Phillips doubled twice last night! ( And made a great defensive play) Phillips doubled off the left field wall (feet away from a homer), and showed good skill with an inside-out swing, doubling to right.

The thing that worries me about Mo (and I'm sure he'll be fine in a week or so) is that he blows big games, games in which the Yankees had just staged a comeback. It seems that he pitches poorly at the worst possible times.

Yup...
So what you are saying is Zito is on the way up...Chacon on the way down...hmmm....

Season:

Zito 2-3 3.75 ERA and 1.17 WHIP 34K -21 BB (4 Starts over 7 IP)
Chacon 4-1 5.21 ERA 1.68 WHIP 24K-21 BB (1 Starts over 7 IP)

In May:

Zito 1-1 0.87 ERA .208 AVG 1.06 WHIP
Chacon 1-0 6.57 ERA .296 AVG 2.19 WHIP

But hey, maybe I need to put in a pie chart form to prove my point...

Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

I'd rather have Zito than Chacon. But Chacon is the better value for the buck.

I think that was the best Yankee game all year ....so far!

Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

Chacon has more wins, fewer losses, just as many walks, and pitches well with runners in scoring position. I don't want the Yanks to sign Zito for two reasons.

1) He struggles against Boston and other AL East teams
2) The Yanks will overpay him...

Yes, Zito is better then Jaret Wright, but he's really no better than Chacon.

Re: Yankees Win a Thriller!

The Yankees think that they should overpay their players just to avoid them of thinking of joining other teams. That is why you never hear of the Yankees in a free agency chase. They offer a huge amount of money and they stay solid at that price. If a team wants to challenge them and topples over their price, then the Yankees just sit and watch them pay the salary. They're just playing it safe.
