Cool Murcer may have reoccurence

Quote:
Former Yankee outfielder Bobby Murcer’s battle with brain cancer may have taken a turn for the worse, the Daily News has learned.

According to an emotional e-mail sent to friends Thursday from Murcer’s wife, Kay, the Yankee broadcaster will undergo a brain biopsy on Monday in Houston after an MRI revealed an “area that doctors are concerned about.”

“Please pray that it will be determined to be necrosis (scar tissue from the radiation), and not another cancerous tumor,” Kay wrote in her e-mail. “It’s one of the two.”

I hope it's nothing....He was my favorite player when I was growing up and he's just a class guy.

Re: Murcer may have reoccurence

I am praying for Murcer. He has more class in his little finger than the rest of Major League Baseball combined right now. He personifies all that is and was good about the sport.

The worst thing the Yankees ever did was trade him away for Bonds father.

Yeah, Murcer was not the same player in San Fransico and Chicago later on ...though I believe late in his career he was a good pinch hitter for the Yankees.

I was crushed when the traded him; after all he was my favorite- but be fair -it turned out great for the Yankees.

First of all, Bobby Bonds wasn't the idiot his son turned out be. He was better than Murcer.

But more importanly they then dealt Bonds for Mickey Rivers and Ed Figeuroa (Won 20 and 19 games) - two very huge pieces in their 2 championships. So if they don't make that deal with the Giants, it's very questionable whether they would have won those 2 titles.

At least they brought him back, 5 years later.

Re: Murcer may have reoccurence

Murcer went on to collect 91,90 and 89 RBI for the Giants and then the Cubs in the next 3 years after the trade. Bonds knocked in 85 with the Yankees in 1975. Murcer however was a much better player than Rivers.Rivers value was as a run scorer and defensive player. he had no arm at all. Murcer scored 9 less runs for his teams in the three years Rivers was with NY, which was a far superior team offensively than the ones Bobby was on. Figueroa's presence also probably kept Guidry down in the minors a couple more years. Murcer said it was the worst day of his life when he was traded and I had a hard time accepting it for years.

Cool Re: Murcer may have reoccurence

Bonds knocked in 85 runs in 75 BUT he was tearing up the league when he hurt his knee. He wasn't the same after that.

But do you think the Yankees win those championships without Ed Figueroa and Mickey Rivers?

Figueroa won 16,19,16 and 20 games between 1976-1979. Guidry won 16 games in '77 so are you saying that Figuroa kept Guidry off the roster for 1 year? If Guidry deserved to be on the team that year, he would have certainly made it over Doyle Alexander, Rudy May, or Ken Holtzman. So that's a real stretch saying Figueroa kept him off.

If you just go by the numbers of runs scored, Murcer and Rivers look the same but when Rivers got on base, it changed the whole game - the way pitchers pitched to the following batters, etc...Look, like I said, nobody was more upset than me when Murcer got traded, but it ended up to work out for the Yankees.

Re: Murcer may have reoccurence

I'm saying that Bobby Murcer had a much better career than Mickey Rivers and deserved better from the team. As for Guidry, we all know that george had no patience for youngsters so he didn't get a chance until he was in his mid-20s.

Cool Re: Murcer may have reoccurence

Clint Eastwood said it best in 'Unforgiven' when he was about to kill Gene Hackman. Hackman said: "I don't deserve this." Eastwood responds:

"Deserves got nothing to do with it." Then...
