Senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Wednesday that he believes the Yankees have made the best offer for Johan Santana, adding that the Twins "are not going to trade him before checking with us one last time."
The New York Daily News speculates that the Yankees' offer includes Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez and "another prospect" that isn't Ian Kennedy. "We're not desperate, so we're not going to chase anything," Steinbrenner said. "In the next two weeks, we're going to have to get everything done.

well duh, what would you expect him to say .... 'naw our offer is real crap, they should trade him to the Red Sox'

That deadline was a joke when he said it. The Twins are going to wait as long as possible to trade him to try and get somebody to get nervous and trade away their whole farm system. If they call the Yanks and so OK they will take him no matter what deadline they used.

The Twins really want Hughes but I'm not so sure the Yanks have the right deal to land Santana right now.

Don't underestimate the Twins desire to move Santana out of the AL.

That would be a goal of mine if I were the Twins. I would get the best deal I could, but with an NL team. Why face an ace pitcher that will be gunning for you several times a year if you didn't have to.

I agree with that...some team, some where, will buckle...the Twins are better off waiting.
